Nice yuccas you got there! How cold was in NJ last winter?

Thank you all for the warm welcomes... I have 3 large thompsons/rostratas have been in the ground for 4 yrs now. They have survived in winter unprotected and were actually covered under snow one year (i'll find the picture). They have also been dug up and moved from my back yard to the front. This past year one of them sustained some water damage (low spot where water ran to when we got heavy rain) and was moved again, and actually shot up a pup after it was moved. I have 5 other rostratas which have not yet formed a trunk (3 of them were grown from seeds and after 4yrs one looks to be just beginning to form a trunk). They also have been uncovered through the winter and have survived frost, snow, and below freezing temps. Although now i do clean the snow off of the heads.

Last summer I added the color guards and soft leaf (at least they were labeled soft leaf but are quite stiff). They were small 1 gallon plants when I planted them and remained through the winter and most of the summer that way. After I finished putting in the rock landscaping the plants grew almost overnight, doubling in size. Rostratas also grew better this year with the rocks. Def think they like the heat given off from the rocks.

This summer I added a 3+ft linearifolia, several 2-3ft filiferas, 7 small yucca rigida (hope they survive winter), and the 2 large faxoniana. Hopefully we will have a mild winter again but from my experience so far its not so much the cold that damages the yuccas but the amount of rain and moisture.

Oh and i also have 2 small windmill palms which have survived unprotected outside and were moved into the rock lawn a couple weeks ago.

Exactly! In my opinion moisture during cold temps is main damage factor. Yuccas can withstand more freeze when they are kept dry.

I love yucca faxonianas. I almost regretted having bought one after I realized they would never survive outside where I live, but after seeing your yucca faxoniana, it would be worth keeping mine in a pot even if it has to come inside in the winter.

Nice Yucca collection. Were did you get a Y. linearifolia from? Select-seeds.com?

When you say filifera you mean Y. filifera? Keep us posted on that one..........they didn't perform very well in Rhode Island when I messed with them. They needed to be very dry in winter or they become a zone 8b/9a plant. When dry they become a zone 6b/7a plant. The filifera I didn't protect was already dead in December back in 2003.

Here's the same one a bit later......low temp under the blanket/heater was 6F. It did fine with that protection.

i got the yucca linearfolia from an ebay seller out of IL... got a couple of the yucca filifera from him too... all nice sized (around 3ft tall) and reasonably priced compared to the few places around here that put ridiculous price tags on them. Gonna try my luck with the yucca filifera since this will be their first winter here...so far so good. Im going to try to cover them when its going to snow, and maybe leave one unprotected to see how it does.

Jay that certainly is a nice collection of Yuccas. :thumbleft: Yucca Filifera..... well the Tropical Centre rate this Yucca as tender as tender goes.... -8C/18F probably a few degrees more if dry. The trunks tend to rot over here if wet and cold. Does well on the French Riviera and dry areas of Spain which is a world away from my Climate and I'm around zone 8a.
It was interesting to see that Tims Specimen survived much lower temps... but hotter Stateside Summers can make a difference. 🙂
