Kansas Storm

Post by Alchris » Sat Apr 14, 2007 9:07 pm

I hope that the terrible storm that swept through Kansas missed you guys.

What little information that I get up here indicates that you got a lot of snow.

Yuck. Tornadoes give me the shivvers.

We used to have our share of Tornadoes up here. I grew up in the Peace River valley where we used to get 'whirl winds' that were just strong enough to lift a 100 to 150 lb boy 6" or so off of the ground. It may seem nuts but we used to jump into them. Further south in the Edmonton area tornadoes occurred about once per month but seldom did more than a little property damage. Then we had a period with killer tornadoes every couple of years. Over the last 10 or so years it hasn't been bad at all with no more than 1 or 2 per year.

I had a friend who walked away from a minor tornado uninjured but the experience broke her mind. 4 years ago a tornado jumped over my brother's house after destroying the local arena and several houses. It came back down a couple of hundred yards later and cut a 100' wide swath through the rest of the town. But nothing has happened to me.

Thankfully most of the tornadic activity out here seems to be in the less populated areas. Bit of wind & hail here each year but that goes with the territory.

After the way Spring has started, not sure what to expect this year :?:

"Whirl Winds" ...We called them "Dust Devils" in Ohio, They were fun to play in, but it sounds like you were getting a better selection

Whirl Winds

Post by Alchris » Sun Apr 22, 2007 5:17 am

When the conditions were right, there were several per day. Most of them would only blow dust, paper or other small items around. But when you got a big one; what a rush. It seemed to last for minutes, but was probably just a few seconds.

Most of our Tornadoes were on farm land as well. My friend was in her 'farm house'.

I also have no idea what to expect. The snow Thursday was the latest accumulating snow that I can remember and I don't ever remember having snow, rain, sleet and hail all in 6 hours before.

Who knows what is next.

Just turned computer on and saw your yesterday posting.
Steve, are you folks OK? I REALLY hope that weather forecast wasn't accurate.
The tornado path...you're presumably away from that area?

Hail...man oh man, greenhouses would need bulletproof glass!

Years ago when we had an apple orchard we got hailstorms every Spring (husband says it was always around Father's Day), so we bought crop/hail insurance. It was a toss up what cost more...the storms or the insurance.

And Allen, wow all that in 6 HOURS? Are things OK?

I remember hearing of a tornado hitting an Edmonton mall probably 10-15 yrs ago. That's a very sad story about your friend in the farm house. I doubt anyone would be "the same" after experiencing that raw power.

We've been at this property for 31 years and felt the last few years' incidents were anomalies. I think it's now the norm.

I see dust devils often. We're on a slope above a valley and dust devils (sometimes 3 or 4 of them at once) rage across the valley floor. I think all the topsoil it takes ends up in Winnipeg
We have strong winds on a good day because we're on an exposed ridge, so you can imagine when a "real" windstorm hits.
Patio chairs are the first to go, garbage cans and doormats simply disappear, never to be seen again.

Glad I've got a 100-pound dog...she's still here!

Compared to you folks, I shouldn't complain...but I'm back in longjohns again, ha ha. :(
Man if this is global warming, what would global cooling be like???? :|

Barb - During the Spring we usually see that kind of forecast about 2X a week. Really don't start paying attention till things are within a 20 mile radius of my location.

Didn't even get any rain last night :( These things will dissipate sometimes as quick as they form.
My GH has held up pretty good to the winds so far........( knock on wood , cross fingers, etc :D

We got it all in 6 hours which meant that the hail was smaller than Sabal minor seed and we didn't get much rain or sleet. I should have taken a pic of the low spot on my patio. It had about a 1/2" pool of water with the surface frozen and covered with hail. The rest of the patio was crunchy when I walked on it. By the next morning it was gone.
