After the storm.
Here's an update on a few of my palms after the snow storm last week. A small Chamaerops humilis (far left - third of the way up), Brahea armata (near handrail), Jubaea chilensis (foreground) and Butia capitata (7' tall). Temps are back to normal and the palms haven't flinched.

Growing palms and other exotic plants here in the Southern Gulf Islands.
Barrie that is an impressive stand of plams. They look great. During that cold snap, what were your low temps (and duration) and what is back to normal temps for you?
THANKS for the pics.

oppalm,
The coldest nights I had where 19.6 f (-6.9 c) followed by 20.7 f (-6.2 c). Temps never got above freezing for 3 days!
Back to normal temps?... daytime 42 - 50 (6c - 10c) and about 38 - 45 at night. Here's a better shot of my Butia capitata (Pindo palm) taken yesterday morning.
Cheers, Barrie.

Like you my low was -6.9C. I was away when all this happen in the Mayan Riveria. Got back to find no damage to any of my palms. Some damage to my cordies though. We will see how they fair in the long run.
Did you protect your butia?

Hi Wes,
I tucked dry burlap down into the growth spear for extra insulation but that's it. That's all I've ever done even when in Jan 2004 the temp dipped to -10.3c (13.5f). I've never had any leaf damage. This is one great palm.
We had about a foot of snow at my place. Some areas here barely got 2 inches. Glad to see the return to normal temps.
Cheers, Barrie.

Not likely
I have trouble getting lights on a Christmas tree let alone any outdoor extras. I might get inspired when that Butia get's about 5 feet of trunk.
Cheers, Barrie.

Butia question
I just wanted to ask you , when do butia capitata start to bloom? At what age or size do they have to be before they bloom? I saw a butia bloom pics on another board and the butia looked very small almost no trunk.
