Very nice palms.

What are the 2 tall palms in pic 004.jpg?

Allen
You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

Allen & John,

Thanks....

Allen, The 2 big trees are not palms..they are yucca elephantis...they look palm like and have been hardened off over the last 4 years...I have been pushing the limit since I've had them..They are potted since they are a z8-9 but very hardened off...They've been out since early April 06 and are still out now..(7 months)..They've withstood our lowest temp to date at 0C. I will garage them when are temps go south this wk.

John, The Yucca Glauca (bayonet), is 6 yrs new..It has now formed a solid trunk which i have mulched heavily around with stones.

The banana (Musa Sik) was cut off at the end of the season and mulched heavily with leaves and pine bark..i have managed to salvage the suckers. The cactus is left alone. The palms are euros and am sorry to say potted for now..They are super hardy however..(potted in the ground since mid March), overwintered in the garage (-5C-8C lowest-a few nights), minimally fazed by the cold and a plant I am planning leaving in the ground once i devise a solid protection method.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Those are great! You ahve a nice collection of palms and exotics. Where abouts are you located? I'm guessing somewhere near Seattle? Cheers, Joe

Banana Joe,

Thanks for your compliments. I live outside T.O (about a mile north of Lake Ontario)..I'd like to think I'm in somewhat of a microclimate with the moderating effects of the lake.

I've been working on pushing my hardies through my Zonal limit with pretty good success.

Having read Dr. Franko's book and reading your's and other's advice has inspired me a great deal.

My favorite palm this year are my chaemerops humilus (euro palm).

Your pics of SSI are amazing....
