Three headed Gloriosa...thinking about removing

Rostrata had half dozen tiny leaves small enough to lay on the gravel when it was planted in 2008.

AGAVE.

I have no idea what kind of agave this is-it started
as a shoot,presumably off an A.Parryi that turned
out to be A.americana judging by the fact it died
from temps in the 15-20F range...this shoot made
it,came up 5' away and has somehow survived temps
that had to have been at least 10F(or colder) when it was small.

Some great plants there Jim. I am so in awe of your Yucca Rostrata... never seen so many leaves on a plant. Your Agaves are awesome. My guess on that Parryi blue form would be Agave Americana Expansa

I was doubtful at first because of hardiness ratings but they say they grow at 3000-6000'
so that should make them pretty tough- not far off Parryi cold tolerance I would suspect.

It looks so similar to both of the ones mentioned...the one difference
I see is the pattern where the old leaves pulled away from the new/center spear.
Agave Americana Expansa has a very unique pattern on the side(edge)and if
I remember correctly,mine has more of the curved imprints of A. Palmeri

Hey Jim I'm amazed yours hasn't flowered. This one flowered on the Arid bed at Cotswold Garden Flowers in Badsey, Evesham at the end of May when I visited to buy ....Agaves

Love all the agaves Jim. I have to agree with desertzone on your agave id. You know I never believed it was parryi. And the place you bought it from sells palmeri too, right?

I have several agaves that died this winter coming back from root so its not suprising to see little pups pop up everywhere.

I never saw Palmeri listed then so I am not sure how it happened...he does list it now though...

AG009: Agave palmeri (high altitude form)

Palmer's Agave is a tall, slender leaved species 48" tall by 60" wide. This selection is from seed collected at 5600 feet in the mountains. It is hardy to 10 degrees F. It may be hybridized with Agave parryi due to its close proximity, which would make it even hardier. Beautiful blue-green horizontal striations on the leaves. 2 year old plants $10.

Hi Jim

Big Mama is an unusually large form of Yucca 'filamentosa x elata'. The leaves are just over 3 feet in length and much wider than the normal 'filamentosa x elata' hybrid.

The other Yucca from Kory is Yucca thompsoniana x (filamentosa x elata 'Big Mama'). Kory had the Y. thompsoniana and I mailed him Y. big mama pollen.

That will be cool!

What about Big Mama's leaves? Do they massively wither and dry like gloriosa's leaves during cold weather and then recover very fast?

Need to ask Tim in Massachusetts about that one.
