Number 2 palm pic.

Post by banana joe » Sun Sep 10, 2006 8:39 am

I believe number two palm is either a species of Johannesteijsmannia or Licaula. I spoke with Ray Baker the Palm expert that works int he garden and he said that the Trachycarpus fortunei that once grew there died. They obviousley didn't like the tropical heat. Joe

I go for the Palms. Just over 5 hours by plane and I can see all the palms in the world. It is a palm lovers paradise! Cheers, Joe

Talipot Palms

Post by banana joe » Sun Sep 10, 2006 4:27 pm

John, Glad you enjoyed the pics. I always rattle off bag loads of them when in Hawaii. Those two massive palms and I do say massive because they had to be the largest specimens I saw in that area. They are a native to Asia and the latin name is Corypha umbraculifera. There are approx. 8 species of Corypha ,and that particula species can grow to 25 meters in height. The fronds and petioles are absolutely massive! Once that palm flowers, it will die. Ray Baker the resident Palm expert told me that there was one in bloom, but I misssed it. .Cheers, Joe

Second pic from the bottom is my favorite. You would have no idea that those palms are so big if Joe was not standing there 8)

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Talipot Palms

Aaron, Even my wife was blown away at the size of those monster palms. It is really difficult to fathom their massive size until you stand beside one. The petioles and fronds are the most massive I've ever seen on any palm. I took pics. of those same palms nearly 7 years ago, but these pics. are much better. Cheers, Joe
