Seed popped-Trithinax Campestris

Post by Kansas » Tue Aug 29, 2006 7:02 pm

On all my other seeds that pop, you can tell the root from the "trunk". Basically, you can tell which way to plant seed after the baggie method.
However, after 7 months of baggie, I have a Trithinax Campestrix seed that popped. However, it doesn't have the identity if the root from the trunk. It just looks like one big root.
Does anybody have experience with this palm popping and can give me a clue?

With some of my Sabal seedlings the shoot didn't come out of the seed until up to a week after the root popped out. I have one right now that the shoot does not want to come out after over a month. I dug it out and the root is still healthy and over 3" long.

Seed Roots

The emerging root should be planted downward. The top growth will follow at a later time.

YEP!!!!!
I checked a couple days ago and it has a lil tree starting to poke out. I figured it would be like somebody else told me about some Sabals that pop and take weeks to actually see a "tree" because the root is growing and taking the energy.
I'll keep you updated, especially Aaron (DZ).

Slow start

I've had one Thrithrinax campestris seedling start from perhaps 50. This, over about a 2 or 3 year period. Freshness of seed is certainly a factor. They are such awesome palms (in time).

Cheers, Barrie.

I have a small seedling that has 5 strap leaves on it. They are very slow growing. I have been watching the same frond coming out for months now. This seedling is from 2002. I hope it picks up speed with age.
