Hardy Eucalyptus species

Post by TT » Mon Oct 07, 2013 2:29 pm

Who had success with growing hardy eucalyptus species (for example, neglecta, gunnii, archeri, pauciflora ssp. niphophila, pauciflora ssp. debeuzevillei) in zones 6b/6a/5b?
[I have read the information, that, for example, eucalyptus pauciflora ssp. niphophila can withstand frosts down to -23 C]

If you have reliable snow cover in the winter, then you should see the trunk survive under the snow. It may take a bit to get a seedling that will do such, but its possible. Many eucs can take into the -20s as long as there is enough snow to protect the roots and lower trunk.

What species of eucalyptus will be better for growing in my USDA zone: Eucalyptus pauciflora ssp. niphophila or Eucalyptus neglecta (or I should try some other species)?

I would try any of the pauciflora. The ssp niphophila is supposed to be the hardest. Any sub alpine or alpne eucalyptus should work because they tend to die back sometimes up there to the snowline.
