Easiest tree fern?

Post by sashaeffer » Fri May 24, 2013 10:36 am

Tried my luck with an Australian Tree Fern last summer and did well outside but rapidly died once inside.

Was wondering if a Tasmanian Tree Fern is any easier?

Sure like the looks of those trunking tree ferns.

None of them will enjoy the dry inside air,esp during winter.

if you were a few zones warmer a dicksonia Antarctica would be your best bet and it could overwinter outdoors with a little protection. IF you can find one with a trunk already it will be much easier to take care of

Thanks Mike! I wouldn't mind bringing it inside for the winter at all. When I saw them at one of the premier nurseries here I noticed that it "felt" sturdy compared to Australian Tree Ferns.

I didn't know if it was a bit easier to over winter inside.

Cooperi will be the easiest to find/one of my favorites....

It will also grow much faster than a DA but the DA is tougher for sure, much.
