Show us your Trachycarpus

Post by lucky1 » Sun Aug 14, 2011 7:16 pm

OK, Erik, will do!

Instead of showing my old one all the time, here are some new pics:

One from John last year, could never keep it moist, so it's been in the fish pond for a month.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6044260692/" title="DSC04877 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6208/604 ... beb7db.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="DSC04877"></a>

A gorgeous 15 gal Trachy also from John, can't find a spot to plant it...
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6044255288/" title="DSC04875 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6068/604 ... 5fb878.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="DSC04875"></a>

Yet another nice Trachy from John...this one's throwing a greener frond now that it received some epsom salts.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6044255298/" title="DSC04876 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6147/604 ... 58716d.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="DSC04876"></a>

And the little T. princeps seedlings:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6044255244/" title="DSC04870 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6123/604 ... 3e4e68.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="DSC04870"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6044255222/" title="DSC04869 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6142/604 ... 44e428.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="DSC04869"></a>

Let's see other people's Trachies! :D

I just love these palms!
They were the first palms I ever saw, having Ben born in Oregon where they do great.
Never thought of a hydrophytic windmil
I'll try to get photos up in a day or two.

I'm keeping an eye on the one in the water...the first signs of distress from waterlogging and out it comes.
Nothing so far though :D

Nice idea for topic(s), Erik! :king:

Thanks. It is from Junglemusic in San Diego and that may be why it puts up with sun and heat better than my other Waggie, from Cistus in Oregon.
Both had heat tape (+ water jugs, hay, plastic teepee) for February.
I plan to dig them up and pot them for my move to the city so they'll live in pots for a while.

Tim, nice job.

It'll take off now.
Love the colour.
And your oldest trachy is gorgeous! It'll move the foundation soon

Oh, Barb... As I mentioned earlier they were planted outside last May. I like the Waggy foliage but dislike the floppy Trachycarpus f. leaves. Hope I will be able to build a palm hut for them. At least I've bought a thermoregulator for a future shelter

Great pics so far, everyone!

Here are some of my Trachycarpus, probably my favourite genus of hardy palm. I've got somewhere between 500 - 750 of them, but am trying to lower that amount  :

My first Trachies, overwintered twice so far:

Looking good guys/gals.

Barb

Those lighter colored palms are most likely Nainital,
they really won't green up much until they get bigger.

What a delight looking at all your pics folks...very very nice.

I agree with you Igor, sometimes Trachy is too floppy, with every leaf folding.
Your Waggie comparison makes Waggies look like the palms of choice because of the stiff leaves.
But some Trachies only fold from wind damage, suppose it's just individual genes.
Really like their location, and that they're side by side.
Nice growth too already!
It'll be good to see which winter protection you choose...let's hope you don't have to do it for 3-4 months!

Your first Trachies, Cameron, are getting wider leaves quite quickly.
And here comes another spear!
Wow...750 palms
They sure look healthy.

Mike...wow, explosive growth is right! either that or its roots are in the septic tank
Fortunately the hail damage doesn't show much and will probably induce more growth.
Those seeds...what a gorgeous picture! :D

Hey Jim, I thought so too that they're Nainital...the sideways trunk is a dead giveaway.
But the big one is nice and dark green...bigger pot, cooler roots probably.

Erik's Trachy post idea turned out to be great eye candy.
Thanks!

I think with the amount of variation in Nainital it
is most likely a hybrid, possibly with Takil.....
that would explain some* of the confusion.

There is a faster greener variation of Nainital(usually less hardy)
and a slower more hardy- "yellow" version.

I don't see why there couldn't be some in between the 2 main types.

*some of the confusion is because people thought they had Takil
because they were sold as Takil, some is because of similarities between the 2.

Yes, I think I had one of those less hardy Nainitals...remember?
I bet there is a lot of hybridization, more than anyone realizes.

I was thinking a Chinese or Indian geneticist, actually.
The methods have come way down in price to where it would be affordable for a grad. student in one of those countries to do the whole project. I saw some great molecular systematics projects by students at that botany conference I went to last month, so I know it is just a matter of time before we hobbyists have the answers we have craved for years.

Excellent siting of those beauties!
Does that Gazebo have electric out to it? If not, can you run electric to it? (wxman can chime in with details.)
I'm thinking of a fan for summer, electric light for reading in fall, and "christmas" lights for the palms thanksgiving to easter.

Thanks, I just put them in 4/5 weeks ago, so they're still getting rooted. I haven't noted any stress from replanting so that's good.

There is electric out there, right now just a GFI. I'm still kicking around how I'll go about winter protection. So long as I don't kill them this year, I'm on the look out for some 4-5 foot trunk windmills to line along the boardwalk that I have in now. It's a work in process, there will eventually be beds on each side of the boardwalk with additional palms and cannas which seem to work well for me.

Before you decide on what type of winter protection you'll use, you need to have your area's average lowest temp (back about 5 to 10 years is good).
Maybe checking with some area residents will help get a historical idea of weather if you're new.

Need to also consider if you get blasts of cold wind from the north/northwest, which can be very damaging, not to mention destroy anything covered with plastic.

Minimum temps will basically help you decide what's needed.

Too bad you don't have your location on your avatar...Canada? USA? zone?
or have we asked that before?

If I remember correctly, he is a solid zone 5b in Michigan so he'll have to use the tricks of lucky1, mnpalms, wxman et alia.
Thus, I am very glad to hear he already ran the GFI out to the gazebo. :D

I'm planning on some sort of wood frame, with styrofoam walls and some sort of plastic wrap. The trees are buffered on the west side but Im in a total wind tunnel. I'm about to order my thermocubes and c9 light strands as well. I researched this big time before ordering the palms, I'm well aware of what I'm getting into. I don't plan on moving for some time, but now I have to wonder if this type of back yard would be a deterrent or something attractive to buyers here in michigan.
