Needle Palm

Post by Wes North Van » Tue Apr 25, 2006 11:14 pm

Question for anyone who knows.
I have been talking back and forth with Broadway Nurseries in Ontario about having a three gallon needle that they say is about 1 1/2' to 2' high with about 4 to 5 mature fronds on it.
They would ship it out to me for about $65.00 plus freight. Does this sound like a good deal or not? Has anyone dealt with Broadway and are they reputable?

Joe,
Do you have any needles or sabal minors that are a good size?

I was just there and thats how much the needles palms are. The needle palm they would ship you is not small. It is about 2 feet in height and maybe 5-7 years old. That is a good price. DO IT!

Wes,

I agree with Ryan, Broadway has a good reputation. I know of at least a ten people who have delt with them and all had positive experiences including myself. I also purchased a 3gal needle for about the same price, which was about 2 ft tall and contained 5 pups. I'm not sure how much the cost of shipping will be for you but it cost me $30.00 in gas just to go there and I know of some people who have traveled over 5 hours to get there. In other words if shipping isn't too prohibitive go for it.

PS.
Needles are very slow growers and it would take many years for a seedling to get that large.

Regards
Phil

Needles & minors

Post by banana joe » Thu Apr 27, 2006 8:49 pm

Wes, I have a couple of Needle palms in the ground and many minors. My largest minor is more of the blue form and it flowers like mad. My bigger Needle palm has lots of nice off shoots and a fairly fat trunk. I have another I planted in 1993 that I grew from seed. I have a wack load of R.hystrix seeds on the go right now. I've propagated dozens of them over the years. They are slow to germinate. There is a nice Needle palm at Grace Point near town. It has been happy in our climate for 10 years now. I'll have to take a pic. of it for you. Cheers, Joe

Joe, Admin was kind enough to send me some Hystrix seeds. I had bought a bunch from Rarepalmseeds.com and they molded away
What do you do to get them to pop? I would like to do a 40% Peat and Spagnum + 60% Perlite + Bottom heat.
Cool????

R.hystrix

Post by banana joe » Fri Apr 28, 2006 9:06 pm

The very first Needles I ever germinated approx. 15 years ago were in my greenhouse with no bottom heat. The next big batch I did 3 years ago I used my hdeat beds in the greenhouse and they germinated quicker. I have also germinated them in zip lock baggies which also worked fine. They can be very slow to germinate and some took well over a year to pop. This latest batch I have are in a zip lock baggy with Pro Mix HP. Basically half perlite to peat. Keep evenly moist and warm. They definately like alot more warmth to sprout. Good Luck, Joe

Wes & Joe,
I don't know about you guys, but I just LOVE the looks of a Hystrix. When I ordered mine from "Plant Delights" I ordered it along with two Fortunei's and was basically a throw in for me.
But I pot planted outside about 3-4 weeks ago and it is visibly growing every day. Since getting the palm about 2 months ago, it has put on two new leavs with the first one fully fanned.
I thought these were historicly slow growers, but I see it growing faster than my two Fortunei.

Needles

Post by banana joe » Sat Apr 29, 2006 5:07 pm

WEs, I did get mine from Casino and it was a 7 gallon size. It was May 2004 I planted I believe or 2003. It has grown a fair bit especially in the sucker department. It has fired out lots of nice suckers. I'll have to to take a pic. for you guys. There may be a pic. of it on the Palms of B.C. site. Dr. Bob has a nice one at Grace Point. He planted that one 10 years ago. It flowered a couple of years back. There are some good pics. of his Jubaea in the latest edition of HPI I recieved in the mail a couple of days ago. Cheers, Joe

I did see the pics in HPI. Very impressive Jubaea. Mine is very small still.

I bought a three gallon needle from Broadway in Ontario. I should see mine this week. I will post pics when I get it. I would love to see your needle pics Joe.

On my Brahea Armata. Do I need to still have a rain cover over it or am I OK now?

Just bought a five gallon Dickstonia Antarticia for $27.00 at Home Depot. I'll post a pic tonight. Joe I want to plant it in the front were it will get a good deal of sun on the fronds in the summer when it gets bigger. The trunk and roots will be in the shade most of the day. I have a trachy in the same garden and it does fine. Am I OK with this spot. The fronds will get sun pretty much all day in the summer.

Dicksonia

Post by banana joe » Mon May 01, 2006 9:21 pm

Wes, Believe it or not my D.antarctica grows in full hot sun when it comes blasting in. I planted my tree fern in a sheltered L-cove close to my house over 12 years ago. The sun doesn't seem to faze it as long as you give it plenty of irrigation. My largest fern has over 4'ft of trunk and I do have a smaller one locally grown from spores. I have it planted under my coast Redwoods without protection for 2 years now. They are nice plants to have in an exotic garden. The nurseries are full of nice tree ferns here. Cheers, Joe

That looks a lot better than I thought that a needle palm would look. I may give one a try.

Wes, You got a good deal, that's a nice looking R.hystrix. You'd pay mega bucks for one that size at Casino. That palm should do well at your place. I really don't think they are as slow as some folks claim. I can see my Needle palm growing. It is opening fronds now. Cheers, Joe

Needle Palm

Post by Wes North Van » Fri May 05, 2006 9:30 pm

Thanks everyone. I am very happy with it. They are a great little palm and the part I like is it is very hardy and I shouldn't have to protect it.
By the time I paid for air freight it cost me $120.00 in total. It would have been $90.00 if I shipped it ground.
It was $59.99 plus $5.00 packaging then around $60.00 for the air charges.
I paid the extra because I wanted to make sure it came to me in good condition. I got it over night and it was in perfect shape.
It is too bad that local nurseries don't carry sabal minor and r. hystrix. They do well here but instead we get them carrying washingtonia robusta and pheonix canariensis that don't stand a chance here. They have the common, trachies and chamaerops humilis that are hardy but if you do not know palms you could pay for a palm that is really an annual.
I don't even see trachycarous wagnerainus or takil in the nurseries just fortunei.
Even sabal palmetto has a chance here but they are never at the nurseries.
So I guess what I am saying is I am willing to pay to have one shipped air because I can not find them here in Vancouver.

Cheers.

Well...I think my needle palm may be dead? It was green this spring but has sence turned brown. The spear wont pull, but it does not look good. I can only hope that it sends up new shoots :)

Needle

Post by Wes North Van » Sun Jun 25, 2006 1:42 pm

Aaron, That is a shame. What temps did you see this winter? How long was it in the ground for?
I am surprised at the damage. They are so hardy, I wonder if something else is going on here?
I would wait before I give up hope. It may resprout during this hot spell.

Wes, it was an unusual winter. Stayed warm for a long time then with out notice it was just below freezing. I think the plants had no time to adapt. The low was -2.6F. but that palm has seen lower temps in the past. It was iin the ground about 4-5 years? I lost alot of plants that have been in the ground for along time. One of the most deadly winter I have seen here.

Yuccaman,

I paid $59.99 plus tax for a 3gal Needle at Broadway back in April. I'm surprised about the $100.00  price. That price should include shipping.
