Trachycarpus fortune Bronx, NY

Post by NYCpalmMANIAC » Sun Feb 27, 2011 1:02 pm

I have two trachys in pots that I placed inside the house all of January and all of February. Should I wait until the end of March to place them back outside or should I put them out now? Before placing them inside I was worried that due to lack of sun light they would stop growing, but they kept pushing on. Temperatures here in NYC will not go below freezing for the next week. So I was wondering if it was ok to put them back outside?

Hi there NYCpalmmaniac!
Welcome aboard.

Are your potted Trachies young/old?
Older Trachies can handle more weather abuse than, say, a one year old.

With a week-long stretch of mild weather, Trachies should be outside, but after two months indoors may burn if they get sun all day.
They'll appreciate the break from hot dry residential air.
Morning sun is best, if you can choose.

Will look forward to seeing some photos of your Trachies.

Welcome to the forum!

If you have young t. fortunei which don't have adult leaves yet, I wouldn't expose them to anything below -10 C. However, they aren't able to handle as much cold when they're in pots.

Personally I would wait unless you know the temps will be at 50F or above.
You shock them if you put them out now after two months of dry 72F weather with no direct sun.
Wait until you are sure it will stay at 50F or above for long stretches to climatize them.
I also agree that if it is sunny only have them in the morning sun and gradually get them use to the afternoon sun.

Yeah I agree with Wes just one day of full sun burnt all mine last year. Some seedlings totally fried. Probably better to wait for warmer, cloudy, drizzly, days of spring.

The trachys are 6 years old and about 3 feet tall. I may wait until the official start of spring. New York city weather can severely fluctuate from cold to warm around this time of year. So just to play it safe I'm going to wait 3 more weeks. Thank you all for your advice
