My Trachy seeded from my enclosed it's second winter? It's first winter was unheated 5.6 degree low temp. I fertilized20-20 for the first 6 weeks after all but three leaves were still green. I grew 14 leaves that year . This winter it got to 14 for 3 hours inside the palm hut. 4 degrees out side with the hut open from wind. That was the only real cold night here in Ma Good thing the c-9 lights where on. Anyone want seeds for some basjoo pups ? Not sure if thats a good trade? billo@shewmail.com

If you do not have a male & female tree, the seed will not be viable.

Thanks for the info Laaz. I do now as of a month ago, but I'm sure that is not enough time. Next year for sure.

Bill, I know I'm posting on a thread that's a year old, but if you still need some basjoo pups, I can send you some. I think I remember you mentioning that you had some hardy cactus starts available, so I'm sure we could work something out. Just let me know!

I think if there is any thing Bill needs it would not be Basjoo pups!
I mean seriously the guy has 99% of the market cornered.

I don't even think he could count them all!

How can you tell if you have a male and female T. Fortunei and is this true of all palms to produce viable seeds.

Thanks

Hey Paul,

Some palms actually have both parts to make seeds, for instance sabal minor does everything on it's own. In rare cases trachies can actually do the same but like I said it's rare.

To answer your trachy question the male flower opens up first and is bright yellow, it also has a more open look to it. The female flower comes a little bit after, and is a bit more greenish yellow and more compact.

Here's a male flower off my oldest trachy last year.

This year I should get a ton of seeds since I have about 40 trachies that are flowering height packed into my greenhouse

Hope this helped a little.

Paul check out the trachies stuffed into my greenhouse.

Not sure if this is the best way to get you to them but it should work.

I'm going to update it today unless I enjoy the outside to much during the day  I'm heading outside right now!
