Papaya

How are everyone's papaya doing?
Mine are outside acclimatizing. They are still in their 12 oz plastic glasses and have not grown more than 3" tall.

They have acclimatized alright. All dead.

Mine never did break out of its husk...someone said I should've removed it.
Figured it would send "something" out of the crack.
It never did.
Starfruit seeds all grew to 3 inches tall, put the community pot out in the sun, and the beggar wilted, with ends dead

I wonder how Todd's did? I think that Kansas & Knn tried as well.

Mine are doing great. I put 2 - 3 seeds in each cup. I'm going to pot them up this weekend. I'll post some pics tomorrow. I just have to find a good spot to keep them where the dogs won't piss on them.... they broke into my Veggie garden today & I was ready to shoot them both.

I am going to seed some papaya in the ground. I can't keep them alive in pots. Same with Mangos. They come up, then die.

I know the feeling with pets. Our cat loves to piss and crap in my lily patch.
Your papayas are about the same size as mine were when I put them out. Unfortunately the weather went from normal spring to hot and windy. Although they were in shade adjusting to natural light, the wind and the 20* change in temperature finished them.
You have a lot more containers than I did. Good luck with having them survive.

Allen these have been outside since I planted them. They sprouted in full sun & haven't skipped a beat. Once they get true leaves they really start to take off.

I am envious. It has only been 2 weeks that I have been able to put plants outsiode.

Allen I will post some photos in the morning why you can not plant these in a community pot. The roots are very vigorous. You see the 3 " plant above the surface, but the entire pot is full of roots. I let these go until I see the strongest of the bunch & then cut out the others.

When I pulled the remains of the Papaya plants from their pots I found that they had almost no root systems at all. Despite being 1 plant per pot in all but 1 pot, which had 2, the root systems were no deeper than than 1/2" and had a diameter of 1" or less.
Any Idea why this happened? I had them inside under CF 'natural' bulbs. I didn't let them dry out and maintained moist soil. The soil was unfertilized potting soil.

Allen,
Maybe too cold a soil temp? Mine didn't take off until I had them & the container in full sun.
Just a guess, mine were doing really well, then planted out in what I thought was a sheltered spot. After a few storms with wind and hail, its time to start some more

I had them in the basement under light 12-16 hrs per day. Basement temp was about 65-68*. That could be the problem.
I'll have to start a new batch outside and hope to overwinter them in the basement.
It sucks when the weather buggers the plants up. I had my bananas shredded when we got winds gusting to 50 mph that blew into my sheltered area. They all survived but most of them are sending up their first leaf all over again.

Wow. Have you gotten any fruit yet?
I decided to use the greenhouse to germinate ornamental grasses for the yard and didn't plant more papaya.
All of the existing papayas died on me.
I should have room to try germinating again this winter in the basement.

I have about 20 fruit on the plants now & still flowering like hell.
