Google Ads or no Ads?

Post by Jay-Admin » Fri Nov 23, 2007 8:53 pm

I have an idea and was wondering if you are for it or not. I am thinking of getting rid of all the google ads on this forum. Now everyone knows that running an active website forum requires hosting that costs x amount of dollars to run every month.

So what I was thinking is having a paypal subscription button and or a paypal donation button so members could contribute to palmsnorth and have it ad free. Of course you don't have to if you don't want to. Palmsnorth will always be free.

I was thinking maybe like $1.00 a month. Or if you feel like donating a dollar here and there. This would just be to cover the cost of hosting. Also Any member who subscribes would get a free platinum upgrade at http://imagehostdirect.com to host all of your pictures.

So what do you all think. Should we just leave the google ads or get rid of them?

Regards,
Jay

I would like to get rid of the Google ads.

But, I know that you would have to make up the loss of revenue.

Can you do that for $1 per month per subscriber

Thanks

Allen
You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

$1 a month per subscriber would be just fine. :)

Would only need 10 - 20 subscribers a month to cover most of the hosting.

"Would only need 10 - 20 subscribers a month"

... then it becomes more involved, soliciting for donations, sales pitchs. Perhaps you don't get the commitment you want?

Cheers, Barrie.

Well that's fine. I wouldn't be pushing anyone to donate etc. There would just be a link to do it. I'm fine with the ads, it covers the hosting. I know people have complained about the ads to me in the past and thought our members would like palmsnorth to be ad free.

Jay

Jay,
Hope you don't mind my candor but the Hallowe'en bats drove me and my computer crazy.
I don't mind the ads.
In fact, where are they? is it that Zero Digs thingy? (never looked).

But as your website's popularity grows (and it will...big time)...doesn't the Google revenue also increase with hits?

IMHO, Google's one of the good guys.

I'd be happy to pay, say, $20 annually, but I've got over 1,000 pics on Flickr.com.
Haven't a clue (nor a wish) to move them anywhere, 'coz I don't know how anyway.

But I'll go with whatever the majority decides, Jay.
I'm not often "on the fence" with opinions, but I am on this one.

Great site...whatever we can do to keep it, let us know. :P

Thanks for your support Barb. :) I have to say if I do remove the ads then I would be losing money but I thought I would let our members have the option to have this forum ad free. If most of our members don't mind the ads then that's fine with me. The diggs thing is a social bookmarking site where you can place a bookmark for the topic so other people can find it if they are interested in the post. More people who finds us the more info we can all share. :)

You don't have to worry Palmsnorth won't be going away. It's been close to four years since I have started this forum and there has been alot of great info and people posting here. Just happy I can have a forum for everyone to share their experiences. :D

Jay

Jay, it must be very satisfying that so many people are interested and participating in something you created.
At least that's what I would think. :D

You mentioned some time ago that you're webmaster for another site.
Presume you're full time webmastering? or?

How many hours a week must you spend looking after Palms North?
Or does it almost run itself (now doesn't that show how little I know about computers? :| )

Great site, great people, great information, great experiences shared.
Now if only my bloody seeds would pop...

Yes, it's very satisfying to create something others would be interested in. :) Designing/building websites is my part time gig. I am a webmaster for many websites. There is always updating code etc. for these forums to make sure they run smooth. My wife would say I spend too much time on the internet.

Looks like everyone had their say and I guess we will keep the ads. Works for me. I enjoy having this forum for everyone to share their addiction to palms. :)

so be it. so be it. so be it. I am OK with the ads, part of life on the superhighway. I sure wish Al Gore would have invented an alternative to ads on his internet. (inside joke)

yup, you're right.
But if there were no ads on Gore's site, he'd probably be President (inside joke)
