Dioon Spinulosum

I know you all get tired of hearing this, but I have another success story on the 2-3year old cow manure.
My Spinulosums (2) had showed no signs of flushing. No spread spreading apart at the top, no nothing. On Monday I went out and threw some of the cow manure I get from my G-Pa's Dairy farm, watered it in good. I went out this morning (Saturday) and I have a cute little flush already starting on one of the Spinulosums. The caudex is a baseball size.
Also, another one of my ping pong ball caudex Taitungensis is putting out a two leaf flush. However this flush is SHOOTING up. Nothing on Monday when I threw the manure on. Now.....

Lookin' good Wes.

Happy with my spinulosum, too, now that it's moving along (without the benefit of cow poop).
I think this guy likes the heat we've had.

So I take it that you keep your in full Sun? Mine is in a Greenhouse. One of the only types of Dioon/Cycad that I don't have in full Sun.
What I have found with Full Sun Cycad/Dioons is that with some (most notably the Nova Wilailik) the leaves that are already on when planting will burn. However the new leafs that will emerge will be just fine and accept the full Sun with no problem.
I know the Spinulosum in the wild are an under story plant, so I keep mine in the greenhouse.

Wes, I moved it into the sun for the pic.
It gets filtered sun for a few hours in the morning, then shade during the burning heat of afternoons.

I agree that initially, leaves do get burnt from the sun.
Then new leaves/fronds seem to be acclimatized and can handle it better.
But I agree with the understory comment.
This baby isn't meant to cook in the sun.

Yep, I am glad we both found the same to be true. That makes me think we are doing the right things.
Now if I could just get my Merolae (2) to flush

Wes, maybe the cow manure takes a little longer on Merolae.

Thanks Wes, I'm going to have to try some good ole cow manure. You know, I have yet to give a Taitungensis Too Much fertilizer. And , as you know, I've grown a few of them. Sorry to say however, I'm very guilty of not giving them any fertilizer at all.(maybe just a few hundred thousand or so.) And cow manure is only $ 1.15 per 50 lb. bag at Walmart. That's a shame. I've got some variegated cycads that should excite a whole lot of people. It would be nice to show them to people , plants they may never see again in a lifetime. Bob

Sorry but I can not help you with camera advice as I just myself learned how to do this on a computer.
Also, I try to make sure I tell all where I got the tree I am taking a pic of. That way if a person is wanting to purchase one, I can help make a sell for that person. Just a way to say "thanks".

In addition to the one with the 2 leaf flush previous in this thread, I just noticed that I have yet another flush starting on another Taitungensis today (8 days after manure added).

So yours took a long time to finish too?? For as fast as mine started, it sure has taken it's time to finish.
Chumley has some nice Variegated Spinulosum , but I can not figure how to post the pics of them

I'm sure it'll do better next year with more fronds.
But the new frond is nice and tall, maybe not finished "stretching" yet.
After all, it was received bare root this spring and, with my inexperience, would have had some
transplant shock.

I think you have to copy the photo to a photo-hosting site first, then grab the URL and paste here
as normal. Careful, though, if it's copyrighted.

OMG, I just noticed today as I was watering inside the greenhouse, one of my Spinulosum is flushing for the second time in 3 MONTHS!!!
I have had the greenhouse pretty steady at High 50's low 60's at night to Mid 70's low 90's during the day.
With my knee problem, It takes a lot to get things out of the way, but if I feel better the next few days, I'll shoot a pic.
