Anyway to tell what opuntia I have without a bloom?

Post by teebee »

I was out a nursery today getting a house warming gift and off in a corner I saw a sad looking 1 gal Opuntia with no price tag I took it up and they said as it is a but damaged they'd give it to me for 50% off so I walked away with it for $10 it has about 20 pads and 1 or 2 have seen better days. I asked what variety it was they really didn't know but said it probably wasn't a hardy variety (so I guess that rules out humifusa) My assumption is Opuntia ficus-indica but can I confirm without a bloom or do I have to make it happy and bloom to find out?

I also walk out with a 1 gal Agave I was told Parryi but it looks nothing like it looks Agave Americana Glauca with several pups for $15. The even had 3-4 foot tall trachy marked down to $60 quite an ok deal.

I'll post pictures of my finds in the morning.

Very hard to tell from the pic quality. My guesses would be opuntia chisoensis and agave americana.

I'd say the Opuntia is one of the Opuntia phaeacantha types, following Andersen (He lumps many of the 'species' like O. chisoensis and similar under phaeacantha), and, ya I agree that is NOT A. parryi. Probably A. americana.

That Opuntia 'may' be hardy, depending on it's origin within the species range.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

my guess on the Opuntia would be a form of phaeacantha. Plant it outside and if it survives 0F it's likely phaeacantha.
