I have mixed results this winter with my Cycad/Dioon...
1 King Sago w/ 18" tall trunk. This is the "King" that I am not sure if it truely is a "King". I bought it at "Wal Mart" when it was marked at $10. It has a trunk that is elongated with a 18" trunk but the trunk is only about 8" circum.Basically, take a softball bat and start at the hitting side, come down about 18" and thats what the trunk looks like. Anyways, it is doing about whats expected from a Cycad inside and in dark conditions (basement) with the old fronds looking dried out and ready to cut come Spring. Those fronds are at least two years old as they were on it when I bought it a year ago. The new fronds I put on this last year are long and arching and beautiful. Looks like a miniature CIDP.
2 King Sagos both with a caudex of a little bigger than a softball. Both did great. Actually better than they did last year after being in the exact same place. Last year I had much more yellow fingureing. This year I only have about 8 yellow fingures combines on both trees.
3 King Sagos w/ baseball size caudex. 2 are NOT doing good. Both have almost all yellow fronds. the one thou is perfect. I think after getting them out in the sun (again, in the basement, but in a place where frankly, they got forgotten about) they will be fine.
1 "Shogun Cycad". Doing great. Shows no signs of stress or any problems.
2 "Edule Dioon". 1 is doing great, no sigs of anything bad. 1 is lossing a frond.
2 "Taitungensis/Guizhouensis Hybrid", Both are great. No signs of any problems. Probably did the best of all species other than.....
1 "Holmgreenii Dioon", Actually had a new frond start on this about a month ago. Slow to peak out, but is doing the best of any species I have.
2 "Taitungensis Cycad", Both did really good. Niether tree showing any problems.
2 "Merolae Dioon", 1 is good but did lose one frond. Other one did not do well with lossing 3-4 fronds. As far as rankings, this species did second to the worst behind....
1 Wilailak Cycad, When I got this, it had about 8 fronds, now it has 5. Had real problems with this browning leafs. Worst species I had this Winter.
1 "Ciircinalis Cycad", Did pretty good. It is currently lossing a leaf as I write this, but all in all did pretty good.
5 "Taitungensis/Guizhouensis Hybrid seeds" , three have started the caudex off the root, 2 have not but do have a healty root on them and I expect a start of a caudex any time.
18 "Edule Dioon seeds", have had 2 pop, nothing else.
1 "Cardboard", saved this tree as I had seen this Zamia at "Lowe's" for a year. When I seen it the last time it was pushed way back in the back and REALLY getting neglected. So I saved it. Doing OK but does have a bunch of yellow fingures. I have a feeling thou that once it gets outside in teh Spring, WATCH OUT!
Can't wait till Spring when I can get some new growth out of all these.
