We'll see how accurate Accuweather is.......a low of 5F sounds good for your area. Accuweather has a low of 14F for me!

Wow.....I should have not commented on our 30 day low forecast of 14F......30 min later they changed it to 7F. Still warm........watch it drop again.

The "threatened" December arctic blast didn't happen...yet.
Yippeeeee.
Thermocube in leaf-bag protection for 2 Washies hasn't kicked on at all
(since I pulled the flimsy plastic-only protection apart and added the leaf-filled bags).
Now they're threatening real cold mid-January.
So far, better than last year!

Barb,
You should try more yuccas. Your winter weather seems better than mine down here.
Looking at your weather sticker -3C and mine at -12C

These 3 y.rostrata out front are plenty.
H is determined to cover the entire property with landscape cloth and gravel so I can't plant anything else anywhere.
But have 2 Big Mommas to plant in a year or two.
Yeah, I noticed your temp too
Come north and warm up.

Barb,
do you have a Yucca elata? These grow tall like palms and are the hardiest of all southwest trunked Yuccas. I don't protect mine....here it is the other day after a snow.

I thought my funny-looking one with the strange trunk (in a pot) was an elata.do you have a Yucca elata? These grow tall like palms and are the hardiest of all southwest trunked Yuccas. I don't protect mine....here it is the other day after a snow.
Nobody was firm on an ID.
I absolutely LOVE that yucca/snow pic!
...and since it looks like a palm just might try one

Hi Barb,
your unknown Yucca may be an elata.........plant it outside and if it gets huge it's an elata.......if it stays small it's probably a form of glauca or angustissima. If your's ever blooms we'll know if it's an elata since elata blooms are different from glauca/angustissima.

For your area it seems relatively normal. According to the map, Im on the cusp of warmer then average, which is pretty much what ive seen.
I could use more snow though, I barely have 2 inches...

The Monkey Puzzle tree in snow was cool too:

Too bad I had to trunk cut my Butterfly bush tree. The snow load snapped the trunk.

You're not worried about heavy snow breaking monkey puzzle's branches, Tim?
Re the butterfly bush, nice that you had it trained to a standard.
I have several old ones that each March I hack off right to the ground because they bloom only on new wood.
So you oughta get a fabulous flower show this summer!

January 2013 has been an unexpected hell in my area
Temps have hit -12 C (10 F) several times, and this current cold snap will likely be 100+ hours below freezing. It was -15 C (5 F) last night. Some plants in my yard are still barely protected! Normally Halifax receives this kind of weather for a week or two at the end of Jan/beginning of Feb, and that is the coldest time of the year. I'm hoping that we get all of the cold temps out of the way now instead!

In regard to the longer days,we have been gaining time(later sunsets) for a while
but tomorrow marks the first morning that the sun actually comes up earlier(1 min),the
day-length will slowly but surely start to increase now-in about 6weeks the sun
here actually gets strong enough to melt snow quickly even when it is below 32F.
