Great pics! Do you protect your P. bambusoides during the winter?

Thanks!
P bambusoides has never been protected. Two winters now outdoors.
All I do is put about 3 inches of mulch over the area by around last frost.

Good stuff ADam!
I managed to get one pawpaw seed to germinate so far. THey grow weird. I though I snapped off the top, as there were no immature leaves. Turns out, it sprouted some a few weeks later, and its on leaf #3!
I cant wait to see the marginal plants you guys have down there in a few months.

My pawpaw seeds appear not to have germinated... but upon further inspection at least one has sent down a taproot. Soon we shall see top growth.
I think we have 40 this year.

Some Pawpaw flowers opened up all the way today:

Phyllostachys bambusoides,
first visible shoots. Three of them within four inches of each other. That runner is about 3/4" diameter.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seedscanada/7168175708/" title="Lincoln-20120509-00686 by seedscanada, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5197/7168 ... 0f8f_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="Lincoln-20120509-00686"></a>
Loquat budding growth after first winter with only wind protection.
Eriobotrya japonica z7a That's just over a year old plant I never expected to make it outside (being so young and no thermal protection).

Tim, on the Loquat there were no branches to begin with. It went in the ground at ten months old. Many of the leaves blew off once I removed the wind protection in March.

First signs of growth on pawpaw seeds after sown 6.5 months ago

We planted our seeds, then had one pair of "juice carton pots (JCP's)" get put outdoors to naturally overwinter. Another of JCPs were indoors till first week of March. Those left outside all winter are showing growth ahead of those that were brought out to spring like conditions. All seeds were prestratified for 90 days, in the fridge in water.

Well done, Adam.
Keep pics coming as they burst out.
Interesting that the ones outdoors started earlier.

Windy night brought us gifts from up in the pawpaw trees. Some are cracking due to dryness before falling.

SO your Pawpaw seeds take roughly 6 months usually to germinate? Thats about how long mine took. I sowed them in January, one germinated in march, and all the rest (9/10) germinated all last week!
Nice pawpaw fruit!

Yes. I sow my pawpaw seeds in october usually and they sprout around the first of July give or take a week or so.
More fruit on my 8 yr old tree than any other year this year. but they are small due to minimal water through most of the summer.
I hope the fruit can gain size now with the considerable rain we have been receiving!

Good! Thats a weird time for them to sprout though, in the middle of summer... Probably has to do with its adaptation to growing in shade when young, or they adapted to shade due to their germination time. I have to bury mine in pots this year, got 100% gemination!

Nice pics! I had some old A. triloba seeds in a room for over a year (not refrigerated). Last week I threw them in a germinating area outside, and one has already sprouted

The loquat is branching after a year of being planted outside. Little grasshopper too...

Oh, and we never had our grapefruit flower or fruit yet. It is only six years old and I have been told that seed grown citrus take ten to twelve years for first fruit. This is why grafted bushes and trees are sold in nurseries... they graft on twelve year old tree growth to rootstock.
Our grapefruit tree was dug and potted up in August and is now seven feet tall in our living room.

Hi Adam
your Loquat looks good. Are you protecting it this year?

Thanks Tim. The Loquats in the back yard (30 of them) are in a windsheltered courtyard microclimate and have no supplemental protection. The one pictured in our front yard has wind protection only (fabric around stakes).
