Soil Drench for soft/hard scale

Post by lucky1 » Thu Aug 18, 2011 2:14 pm

I'm not keen on chemicals but bugs/crawlies have gotten to the point where EVERYTHING'S got scale (or something else) :?
Thanks, in part, to me losing the battle with trying to control ants.

And I don't want bugs inside this winter.

Next week I'll be spraying and soil drenching Dimethoate 480 (if I can get it).
(Thanks John for the recommendation).

Should be enough time before plants go indoors...

What do you use and how effective is it?

Barb

I don't use anything but need to. Hopefully we'll get some good replies to this thread, and of course down here I have the luxury of waiting to see what works up north :D

Wouldn't know about Canada, but it is hard to research information about the legality of chemicals here. I tried to track down a chemical Jim recommended on this forum a few months ago only to find that OK was on the short list of individual US states that prohibit it.
Also, sometimes having a business changes your rights, so Barb may have an option you don't.
Alright, in addition to needing a geneticist, maybe we need an attorney on this forum?

John's dropping some off at my place next week (thanks!)
H went to a farm supply to get Dimethoate 480, turns out it's only available in 10 litre size for $300.00.

Holy cow.

But what was interesting is that he wouldn't have needed a valid pesticide operator's licence to purchase it.

If you saw the scale on all my palms...nobody would quibble about using pesticides.
I'm sure as heck not putting them back into the house for winter with those pests on them.

I went to a garden center, just minutes from my house and asked the guy about some strong chemicals. He said he can sell it to me because I asked, but he can not advertise it or display it. I don't have the box in front of me, but I can dig for the name

Sounds like he's selling cigarettes in Canada

It's for scale? soft and hard-shelled?
Would be interesting to know what other products other than Dimethoate 480 can knock 'em out.
Somebody said this stuff is the "old" Cygon 2-E that we used to paint on birch tree bark to knock out birch leaf miner.

I don`t usually like using chemicals to treat bug problems. Sometimes it`s the only option like in Barb`s case when things are out of control. I used dimethoate 480 on my house plants and tropical palms last year before bringing them in Oct. No bugs for three to four months. I Used coffee grounds and garlic to control any return of bugs till spring. Barb see you next Wed.
