Making it difficult to time plantings

Post by canadianplant » Thu May 05, 2011 8:30 am

Up here, its always a guessing game in terms of last frost. Some times after a mild winter we have a long wet coold spring, and a short cool summer. Sometimes after a super cold winter, spring is short and summer is long. The average last frost date is june first, generaly, its before that ( i believe last frost dates are the days whenit is 100% sure there is no frosts , please correct me if im wrong).

Last year ( winter/summer 09/10) was a very short dry winter, with almsot no spring, and a very long summer. The winter that jsut past ( 10/11) was more typical of my area, but relitivly short. Spring was a bit wetter then average, but other wise its bang on "normal", except the night temps.

For the last month, the temps have barley gone below freezing, with mabey 4 or 5 days outta 30 below -1C. The last 2 weeks, have had 2 days of frost, and the last 5 days have been no frosts. To spare some typing, heres the link for my 2 week forcast

Not to bad. Seems to be no indication of frost at all. Im very tempted to start to harden everything off ( hardy perennials, annual tropicals ( dig up liek dahlia, canna etc) and the seed started plants ( " average" garden food, grape vine etc), and get it ready to plant for a week or so. In cautiously optimistic ATM. Whats your opinions on planting now?

We haven't had frost here for a little while, but we're still getting rather cold temps mixed in. I don't want to plant my McCurtain outside when the highs are 10 C and the lows are 4 C
