Thanks for the pics Jim.

Dig that banana up and take it in for winter... How else are you going to get any potassium?

Thanks guys/gals

His mom took the photo.

He was making faces at me the other day
so,I snapped one :P

Paul

I thought about building some contraption around the Banana plant to keep the blooms going......
but I think I have enough to keep me busy.

Cold air comes down from Canada this weekend,we are in our longest driest stretch of the year right now
and 'they' are predicting an Omega block through(at least) next week/beyond?,
nice to let things finally dry out-especially going into fall/winter!

Omega block=

Jim,
did she take the dragonfly photos as well? Those are stunning. I cannot imagine the skill it would take to get a snap like that!
I find plants hard enough to take pictures of!
Also, thanks for the "block" link. That was interesting.
I'm also appreciating the cool dry air we both have right now. --Erik

Sure jim, blame canada....... lol. IF it makes you feel better, we had out first frost saturday night. Cannas have stopped in their tracks, so have my morning glories..... I think the passiflora and cyperus are still going though.. .dunno how I pulled that one off :S Funny.... days at 14-18C, and nights hovering around freezing......

The banana flower is crazy. Any luck on an ID yet??

No ID(ea) yet Jesse-thanks for not sending to cold of air down just yet :D

Looks like about 38F again last night Bill :D it did frost about 125-150 miles north of here though.

Garden still looks untouched and surprisingly the Bananas and Thai giant(etc) continue to grow.

Never heard back from James about the other 4 Takil, hopefully they went out today

Wow, what great pictures Jim. The banana blossom shots are sooooo interesting.
Have never seen how bananas develop from the blossom. Very cool.

Since that Thai is out front, I hope you were wearing pants....

I can only imagine how hard you're working to protect stuff in the coming days. :?

Nothing to imagine on either front :D

Check out the 10 day forecast-gorgeous!

http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/52556

I don't have to protect anything until we approach the mid 20s(F)and even then 2 of the
T.ferns will be first to get covered but not permanently -yet.

I only need to use a few (new)covers this year, most everything else gets the same cover.

I am going to experiment with one of my Waggies exposing it to more winter weather
this year.

Hey Jim, whats your opinion on that Arundo? Ive read they can survive up in zone 4, with a super thick layer of multch...

I think they would easily-
I hardily protected mine at all, just a pile of mulch right over the top and it came back and grew to
11' this(2nd) year.

I am sure it will be even bigger next year!

Jim,
did you find Arundo at a local nursery or did you get it mail order?
I know it grows well here as there are numerous big clumps in the area. I might just ask next Spring if I can dig some up.

Oh well, I'll just have to make another road trip in April. (Wonder if the neighborhood will still have, uh, )

Arundo is such a crazy grower in the SE states, and areas with lots fo rain, im sure your buddy would let some go. Then again, all you really need is one rhizome

Canadian- I grew Arundo for one summer, 2 small plantings. This past winter (extreme low in the zone 6a range, -23C or so) killed it outright. I 'only' put 6" of mulch on it, so that was definitely a factor!
