Greetings from Simferopol

Hi, my name is Alexander, I live in the south of Ukraine in the city of Simferopol, it is the capital of Crimea. The city is located in the valley Salgyr and lies between the Inner and Outer ridge of Crimean mountains, so its climate is characterized by a zone 7b. I like your forum and I think there will find a lot of useful information.
By the way, I often talk with Yuri from Kherson.

No it is not Bulgarian, it is with our (Crimea) of local seeds

I just looked up your city. Looks like a very nice place. If I ever go to europe, id probably visit the country, cause my dads grandparents are from ukraine ( I have no idea where though).

You seem to have a very nice climate. Average low in January was stated to be -3C, and 0-4C as a high. Do you know your record low?

I agree, Simferopol, seems like a wonderful place. Hope to visit someday!
My sister-in-law is from Lviv (western Ukraine), and my brother goes to Kiev on business often so I'll probably make it there sometime.
Jim, the "hotties" I got were all of cars. Must be the internet knows I have a hot W but need chrome wheels....

Anyway, yes, very nice Trachycarpus. Super color on it.

Our least in the history of meteorological -25, but the weather station is located far from town, so the city can be a little warmer. In winter, may climb to +15, at the end of December is always the lack of snow and warm. The absolute maximum winter: in December +25.4, +20.4 in January, February +21.8. Summers are hot and fairly long, with a maximum of this summer +40.

That still isnt to bad. IT seems sort of like the east coast of the states. You could probably get away with growing and over wintering some interesting plants.

Id look up Chameadorea Radicalis, hardy to -10C. And Chameadorea Microspadix, hardy to -8C. A bit marginal there, but with some protection, i bet youd be successful. Look up Phoenix Theophrastii ( cretean date palm). ITs hardy to zone 7B, and looks something like the Canary Island Date Palm. Watch the spines on it though...

Are you growing Chameadorea? I'm looking for anyone with experience with them where it gets really cold (vs. say, BC or the UK).
Feel free to start a new thread; I don't really mean to take over this great one on Ukrainian Trachycarpus....

I have a Chameadorea cataractarum, and chameadorea elangans. Im trying to grow some radicalis from seed. I dont think theyd have a chance here at all, but theres no harm in trying one mabey.

I know more about gardening in zones 6-10 then in my own zone. From what I can remember seeing, most of them were in california. Their habitat is up in the mountains, the radicalis is from somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-8000 feet if I remember right. I think cool, and humid cloud forests myself.

Im trying to get my friend in N Carolina to try one. IM definelty gonna send him one if I get em to sprout.
