Dioon spinulosum loves indoors

Post by Lori »

Dioon spinulosum loves the indoors. This specimen is seven years old and just threw two new very large leaves.

I am glad to hear about that, Lori. It grows like crazy outdoors for us here in Miami, but it is always nice to know that certain plants will do well indoors.

I imagine a 7-year-old D. spinu growing in Miami would be huge in comparison. This one does go out in the summer but stays in the shade. And because we are on the coast it never gets very hot here. I think yours probably gets better growth, Barb? It gets pretty hot up in Vernon.

Yes, mine's on the patio in shade, receiving only some morning sun.
But it does like heat as long as it's not full-on sunshine.
Agree that D.spinulosum does well indoors; of all the plants I bring inside in the Fall, it's the only one that doesn't seem to mind drier air.

I was an idiot though a couple of years ago.
Decided to foliar spray some chelated trace elements (for no other reason than I happened to have some!?!) :?

Must've been the iron that permanetly etched/burned those gorgeous leaves.
Oh well.
Am currently waiting for new leaves that will eventually allow me to cut the damaged ones off.

However, the caudex has doubled in size in 2 years.
This remains one of my fav cycads.

Finally flushing, slow this year.

It'll be exciting to see a 5 foot long emerging frond one day.

Thanks Bill...and sharp isn't a misnomer
It's got teeth on those stiff leaves...have to keep the pot away from path and bare summer legs (ouch!)

Yup late is good as long as it happens.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
