Morning glory question

Post by canadianplant » Tue Apr 13, 2010 3:21 pm

My morning glory seedlings are growing faster then I anticipated. The nights here are usualy above freezing latley, with a few nights at around -1 to about -3C. Our last frost date is June 1st. I would be a bit to over confident if i planted then now, even with some plastic over em wouldnt I??

They're weeds here and I use Round-Up on 'em.
Cheers, Barrie.

Round Up

Barrie,
you're hilarious lately.
Last August I felt "round up" was the best way to control Colocassia. Today was I was glad to see 'em coming back up.
I also have a zillion Hyacinth Beans coming up everywhere. In a couple of months, I'll be wishing I used Round up on them in April. Today, I see them as a sign of spring.

As for the Morning Glory, they're great plants, too. I suggest taking care of the seedlings a little longer until soil is warmer. I get eager this time of year, too, but i'm holding off a little longer and watching soil temps closely before planting.

Be careful with seedlings they are more cold sensitive than older plants, I lost some
Castor's a few years ago from near freezing temps-I am growing some moon flowers myself this
year, they are very similar to morning glory but have very large fragrant night flowers.

I gotta agree with Barrie... I find myself pulling those things up constantly while weeding my beds:)

I understand you wanting to set fire to your morning glory vines. But, I would like to keep em alive thanks LOL:D My friend in north carolina said " Ya put em outside, then the basterds freeze".. lol

Normaly i wouldnt think of planting anything this early, but so far *knocks on wood... Our spring has been a month and a half early, the temps now are still around end of may or june temps. Even the lows are starting to stay above freezing, less and less days during the week. The last 5 days i havnt seen any frost whatsoever.

Of course i wouldnt be asking if i didnt think mother nature might pull a fast one on us ( these "great" canadian springs lol). Thanks for the input..... Now how long would you suppose theyd survive in plastic dixie cups? The large ones.....
