sabals

Post by Wes North Van » Sat Apr 15, 2006 9:56 am

I am growing four different kinds of sabals. All of them I germinated from seed between December 2003 and February 2005.
What I have found is that sabal mexicana is the fastest growing seedling.
Sabal palmetto seeds were geminated first back in 2003 and they are now just on their 8th frond. sabal minor and sabal minor northern texas seem to be growing at the same speed, very slowly but they are growing differently. Sabal minor n. texas has longer strap leaves that the regular sabal minor. S, mexicana has a bluer leaf and wider and stiffer than s. minor and is already on their third frond. All but the sabal palmetto were germinated at the same time, Feb 2005. All survived outside in an unheated greenhouse. Low temp this year was -4C or 25F.
I am hoping to find a faster growing sabal that can handle the PNW weather.

I have added a pole to see what others think about sabals and what is the favourite.
I know there is more varieties of sabals but these are thev more hardier ones.

First pic is the largest one that is now on it's 8th frond. I think it is going to be a mature one as it is splitting into a small fan.

Sabals

Post by banana joe » Sun Apr 16, 2006 10:01 pm

I have quite a few different species of Sabals in my garden as well. Most I grew from seed that were collected from palms that have experienced very cold minimum temps. I have many Sabal minors my largest has the bluer type fronds and many flower spikes. I also have many regular green form. Lots of S.palmetto seedlings in the ground for a few years now and one I planted in 1993, but in a bad location. Sabal riverside, S.causarianum, S.texana, S.birmingham (many) and S.blackburiana. There is a very nice Sabal growing near town at Grace Point for 9 years now , but nobody seems to no the exact species. It has large fronds and opens three fronds per year. It has never as so much showed the slightest Winter damage. They are nice palms, but at this latitude they need a very sunny hot spot to grow. I also have quite a few smaller S.louisiana anotehr slower grower here. Joe

I had one germonate right away and then nothing until a month ago when I applied bottom heat. I now have another 16 that have germinated and are ready to be transplanted into pots.
Thanks again for the seeds.
If you are looking for trachy fortunei seeds I have lots.

sabal palmetto

Post by Wes North Van » Tue Apr 25, 2006 10:59 pm

I just got my latest HPI and I just read the story about a home in West Vancouver that had a fairly large sabal palmetto that was fried back in Jan 2004. This was a good sized palm and it concerns me that sabal palmettos may not be hardy here in the PNW without some form of protection during our infrequent cold spells.

Wes, You just click on the profile link at the top and scroll to the bottom where it says avatar control and upload a pic or you can link it from a url.

That's too bad about the palmetto. :(

Jay

Birmingham seed

Post by banana joe » Wed Apr 26, 2006 6:34 pm

Sorry Aaron, When I recieved a bag load of S.birmingham seed a few years back I grew it all. I haven't had any more of it since. I sold quite a few of the seedlings and planted a bunch in my garden. I got the seed from a guy in Georgia. Cheers, Joe
