Agreed. Yesterday wasn't too bad here, 6c and sunny. But today is AWFUL 9c and RAIN, yuck! If you know me, you know that my least favorite weather is between 0 and 10 with rain...
However, after a long freeze I would rather that we stayed above freezing, but, they say we've now got 3-5 days of COLD again before it warms up. I think I'll start gardening as soon as the frost is gone.

John ... There was very little snow in much of metro Vancouver and southward through Richmond / South Delta. Pretty much all that did fall is gone or will be by the end of today. The Valley communites of Abbotsford and Chilliwack bared the brunt of the weather again.
We picked up 3" of wet snow and some places just south of here in Nanaimo, had between 8" and a foot of snow. The south Island didn't get any snow. Port Alberni had about an inch and I don't know if any fell in Tofino (quite rare there).
Rain and 12°C (54°F) for the weekend. I'll just hang out in my greenhouse :D

Cheers, Barrie.

Next week looks even worse here. Possible snow storm next week and below average temperatures. My Butia are completely fried after 5F low we had earlier this year. (avg. 7F)

Arctic high's keeping the snowstorms away.

Post by yuccaman » Sun Mar 01, 2009 7:05 am

We had a pretty good February where in the whole month we saw nothing more than 7 cm of snow but we saw over 45 mm of rain which is rare.
It's very cold here! That warm up on Friday went from 7'C to -17'C on Saturday Morning and all the water is hard as rock.

Next Friday to Monday with a range of 3'C TO 7'C with sun and showers, Not too bad.

I heard Alabama is getting some snow and ice but it will warm up back in the low 20's in no time.

Oh yes, please, John!
finally warmed up enough yesterday and snow was melting.

But sun always is covered by thin clouds.
Seldom a truly sunny bright day which would melt everything faster.

My property looks like a glacier.
Two inches of ice UNDERNEATH a foot of snow.

I'd love a day of rain, Paul.

turtile, sorry to hear about your Butia. Stone dead? :(

The Butia may live although this morning's low of 7F as a result of the snow storm may have done it in. I think we broke a record for today.

It has been a while since we got snow, -15*C and winds of 30+ K.

My wife was still thinking of yesterday's 6*C, sunny day when she opened the door just before sunrise this morning.

I held the door closed to keep her from coming back in.

Then watched from the window as she waded through knee high drifts in her runners.

(Actually she was going to miss the bus if she changed into her winter boots.)

Aaron is that a pic from today? Most of my snow is gone except for the piles left that I shoveled endlessly in Dec. Yesterday out in a t shirt washing the truck sunny and 10c 50f. Shorts and flip flops just around the corner.

Here are pics from today. I shoveled out the sidewalks and the drifts are gone.

The Palm shelter is below the bedroom window

The yuccas in the 'desert' are buried under 2' of snow. I haven't seen them in a couple of months.

With the cold weather we are forecast to have, the snow may take until mid April to completely melt.

We'd better not look ahead to Thursday, John.
The newspaper predicted a low of -24 C.

I hope it's a typo.

If that were the case we would be setting huge low records for early March. I think a lot of people are giving a collective yawn to global warming. Last year at this time I had some of my plants out and friends asking me to play golf. I guess this summer is going to be extra hot to make up for this blip in our usual springtime weather.

We got that Alaska freeze starting last night. It went from 2*C to -24*C overnight. We only got about 2" of snow but the winds are about 30 K gusting to 70 K. We are drifted in again and have wind chills pushing -40*C.

It is just too cold to go out and shovel. Hopefully it will be calmer tomorrow. Chris is just beginning to recover and I am just starting to get sick again. I don't think that both of us have been healthy at the same time for more than a few days since Christmas.

Wicked stuff guys but not long to go,got a chance to take out the heating on all the palms and rake some mulch with temps in the 60s and low 70s/-/Low 30s for highs Wed-Thurs and back to 50 by the weekend,so, nothing I can't handle after this winter, heres to hoping for a mild/warm April as March takes us out of winter.
You might be on to something John,as far as a warm summer goes/not long to go now, hang in there guys & gals 8)

We've got a high predicted of -3C on Wednesday, but, other then that every day should be above freezing... Overnight lows may drop below -10C though. Still after the long freeze anything above freezing feels warm!

A the risk of sounding like a broken record, old man winter has settled in again here for a couple of days. Unseasonably cold weather of 25°F (-4°C) overnight and only 38°F (4°C) during the day. It has all the feel of a January cold snap, but it's MARCH. The only plus side is it's sunny and inside the coldframe, daytime temps are a comfortable 70°F (21°C).
We're told it will break by late in the week but I believe with firmly entrenched cold in Alaska and Yukon, old man winter ain't done yet.

Cheers, Barrie.

Well I obviuosly have no room to complain ... -24°C (-11°F) is well beyond my experience of cold. Good luck with that.

We set a new record for temperature change in 24 hours today. From -29*C to 3*C a total of 32*C/58*F change in 1 day. This does not include wind chill calculations which would have added another 10*C/18*F.

When I went out to bring in the garbage garbage cans this morning i wore a T shirt, jeans and Crocs. Quite a change from parka, tuque, gloves and winter boots that I was wearing yesterday morning when I took out the garbage cans.

I am hoping that this was the last cold spell this winter.

Been fairly nice here over the past 4 days or so. Temps in the mid to upper 60's (18°C -19°C) That's about to change for the coming weekend with some rain in the forecast and cooler temps.

Cheers, Barrie.

About time!

Post by Okanagan desert-palms » Tue Apr 07, 2009 10:05 pm

It was 22.4c 70+ f today. It`s finally nice to see some regular spring weather here. All of my potted palms have been out for the last week. If the cousin of old man winter shows up I`ll have to spend a least another 2 hours putting them all back.

It's still too cold to put anything out but it got up to 13*C/55*F yesterday and only down to -1*C last night.

Unfortunately it is still too wet to walk in the yard and the garbage and dog shit from last winter will have to remain an eyesore for a few more days.

John ... it's always a true indictator of spring when the interior temps surpass the coastal readings. Soon you guy's will be in the 30's celcius and will have left us in the dust.

I managed to get a suntan already from being outdoors a lot this week...or maybe it's a windburn.

Come on warm weather...I want to plant some palms and rostrata!!!! :)

I don`t think snow is a factor here anymore fingers crossed. I`m just watching temps hovering around 1c 33f overnight . My smaller 3 gal. potted palms should be able to handle -3c 30f without having to haul them back in the garage. We are looking at 24c 76f by Tuesday.

The snow is pretty much gone except in the shaded areas. The temperature is forecast to reach 13*C tomorrow which should pretty much get rid of the last of the snow.

Jay; if you are driving be cautious of the "sand" left over from last winter. It is about 1/16" in diameter and acts like marbles when thinly spread. The first few times that you gently press the brakes and have the ABS cut in is a surprise. In almost all places it has been pushed against the curbs. Side street intersections can be bad.
