TYTY Nursery and zone 5 afghani palms?

I have not ordered anything from them. I have seen posts regarding Ty Ty NOT very possitive feedback from people dealing with them .I would try jungle music palms and cycads ,or plant delights. Google these and you will be much happier than dealing with TY TY.

Becareful when they say zone 5 palms. Unless they have grown a palm in zone 5, I would question it. Many places get info off the internet and sell their plants based on that info. I only trust places that have done cold hardy testing in those zones.
That does not mean that they will not sell you a very nice palm. But I don't think most people in Florida and other warm places have any idea what a plant has to take in a zone 5, that means that palm should take down to -20 below F.
All palms even the best cold hardy ones are a risk in zone 7 and lower, but some will make it, but the risk is there.

Foreal. It seems slightly suspect.. The thing that got me thinking is that the climate and elevation of afghanistan. Ive heard from several people that the terrain in Afghanistan is very similar to the owyhee desert that I happen to live in. (I guess im kinda off topic myself here...sorry..but) Maybe this might be a good match for the Boise valley? Have you tried growing this DezertZone?

There have been many many complaints about this particular nursery, not only as a nursery but also their eBay dealings. They have a very poor reputation.

Over the years I've heard nothing but bad things about that company. I've heard of so many folks getting ripped of from that company. I would shop elsewhere. Joe

I have a friend who regularly drives from FL to AL on business (she owns a health club in AL and has to go check up on it almost monthly) and she drives right by that nursery in GA. She wanted to get some plants and since she knew I owned a small nursery myself, she asked me if I knew anything about them. She said everytime she drove by there were a horde of young shirtless really well built males kind of "farming around" on the premises, working with the plants. She said she was tempted to stop just to take a gander at all the 6 packs. I just laffed and told her to look at their website, they do the same thing. Its almost like those guys are trying to be male models out in Dukes of Hazzard-land. I said if I was her I'd stop and admire the scenery but not waste my money on the plants.

From what I have heard, you would have a higher rate of return with the Bellagio than with TyTy...

About the Nanorrhops, I have not tried it but I think it would be a good try here in the Boise area.

The only palm that could survive a zone 5 winter. A needle palm without a trunk With some mulch. jims does that to his and it survived 4 winters so far.But they could still die. I lived in florida before zone 9 and I grew a needle palm and it died in march I dont know what happend to it.I will be moving back to florida

Thanks folks. I think ive learned a few things from this.. And what IS the deal with the tarzan look? Send in Fabio! That place is freaky. HahhaHah. Im down with freaky once and a while... but im not down with getting hosed. Thanks for the heads up ya'll. And the suggestions for alternative suppliers.

I think im going to try these "afghani's" here in the Boise valley. Why not? Thats why were here right?

I wonder sometimes, after hearing these latest revelations from TyTy on this and the other message boards I frequent... Sounds almost like a male Hooters now... Hooters is babes and booze, maybe TyTy are trying to do the hunks and palm trees thing. On the other types of plants they "sell"? they don't have the shirtless guys on the pics. Usually families on their trees, fruit plants, etc. from what I remember.

I don't have any personal experience with this company, but because of all the horror stories I've read, I would never deal with them. Nobody is perfect, but if you read posts from other web sites (e.g. davesgarden.com) you'd think they bordered on criminal. I used to go there just to be entertained by the negative responses.

It got so bad that the Dave's pulled TyTy off of their search, for fear of retaliatory litigation. I find it hard to beleive that this company can remain in business. But with 280 million of us there are always a new crop of potential unsuspecting gardeners.

Early on, I found their selection of palms (needle mazari, trachys, etc.) enticing and price/shipping fair. But the more I read of the posts and seeing the "wise-ass" photos (I'll bet one of the Duke boys maintains the web site), I decided to pass.

With a little research, there are hundreds of good online sites out there with people who have a business ethic that you shouldn't have to cross your fingers and click.

I looked at their website and they have definitely changed it. Their website used to be really "beefcake". There were a lot of hunky guys some tatted up some not posing with a lot of plants almost in a calendar like dealie. Now, I see, its changed. There are still some photos of guys, but also of girls, and also of other "weird stuff". My guess is, there's someone in the family who is aspiring to be a photographer who thinks they are taking "art shots".

The one thing I know from hanging on the Aroid forum at a large gardening e-site is that Tyty and "Arron's Bulbs" are pretty much the same folks. People have posted that when they have "questioned" a claim made on eBay about something in an auction description, that they have gotten "nasty" emails back in return, and then the auction has mysteriously "disappeared".

I guess "enuff said".

I don't know aht you all are talking about!!!
I just left there and I bought a coconut palm for $40 that they told me I would be able to grow straight planted here in Kansas. CAN'T WAIT!!!
I bought a 6' tall Sabal that they told me was only 9 months old!!!! GREAT STEAL huh????
I found them VERY helpfull!!!

Maybe we can pray that TyTy has heard their complaints and may be beginning to straighten up? They (say they?) have a lot of species, palms and other stuff (they have a whole bunch of other stuff on there, including many Southern natives) that one cannot find too easily other places. Then again sometimes people get lucky...
