BEAUTIFUL!!! You will LOVE those!!!
I am actually more of a Cycad/Dioon guy now than I am a Palm guy. They are just easier to take care of and much more tolerable of adverse conditions than palms IMO.

Just got a nice shipment from Robert Chumley today. Included in the order was Guizhouensis X Taitungensis Hybrid x2 , Dioon "palmaSola" x 20, Dioon "Jacula" x 10, Softball size "Taitungensis" x10 (a few for my neighbor), and some Australian variety I forget the name at the moment... All very nice plants. I will get some pics when it is light out this week.
A big thank you to Robert Chumley once again !

Todd, man oh man, nice indeed.
And those taitungensis are huge...do they now go into your warm house, or a cool well-lit GH/basement?
I couldn't find any images of Dioon sola, D.jacula...
Are they from Mexico? Madagascar?
Great shipment! Keep us posted as they grow.
Thanks for pics.

Barb the dioons are all from Mexico, Robert can give you better specifics than I can. They all stay outside in the yard unless we get a real cold blast, then they go in the garage. They are all going in the ground in March.

Hadn't seen a pic of those before.
Thanks for the link.
I'm looking forward to your "Planted" picture in March...to see where you put the Bismarckia.
With its leaves capable of spanning 9 feet, it'll need a wide berth.
All those Dioons will round out your tropical look.

Those and other Encephalartos species are what I normally sell on my web site for $20 each.....but a few people have bought my stock
down, especially Trispinosus and Aemulens. I hate to see people throw big money California's way.
I live on 12 acres in Central Florida about half way between Tampa and Walt Disney World.I have seed colonies of over 60 varieties of cycads. I have over one half acre of variegated cycads and I make many hybrids as well.

I agree. We need to get more of the BLUE Encephalartos here on the East coast at affordable prices. When you go to a nursery here and ask if they have any Encephalartos they don't have a clue what you are talking about... They will however try to stuff a ton of King Sago's down your throat...

Todd, very nice, robust specimens.
How do you know at what height to plant them?
Are you leaning more towards growing cycads than palms from now on?

Barb I plant them with the top of the caudex just visible.
No, I am still growing a lot of palms & citrus. The palms & citrus tend to grow very tall and you can only have so many sabal minors & saw palmettos so I decided to add a bunch of cycads to fill in underneath...

That planting depth is good to know...looking at the picture I wouldn't know.
Your cycads will be gorgeous as an understory to your palms and citrus.
Perfect for them.
And the Bizzie a starring role in the center of the yard, I bet!

You are lucky to be able to get cycads so easily and to be able to grow so many species outside. I just checked my c. panzi and it survived our cold snap easily. It looks like a winner for the PNW.
What would be the second hardiest cycad be in your opinion?

Wes I believe that cycas Guizhouensis is as hardy as c. panzi and maybe a bit more. You may also want to try a Dioon Edule.
Have a look here, a lot of great info and pics.
