Pindo palm in a 6a???
Hello. I just got back from a vacation in the Virginia Beach area, and I was surprised to see that they had some really nice pindo palms growing down there. I think that area is around 7b/8a. From what I've read, Pindo's aren't nearly as hardy as a trachy or a needle, but almost all of the trachys I...

Very cool to hear that there are some other musicians here. Music is what I do, and I've played since I was a kid. I'm a manager at a music store and I play out live and do recording sessions from time to time. I'm primarily a drummer and guitarist, although I've been the lead vocalist in a few band...

Yucca ID please!
Hello... I bought this yucca last spring at Lowes... picked it up in the houseplants section and immediately brought it home and stuck it out in the yard. It was tagged as "cane yucca", but I'd like to know the exact species so I can look up hardiness info and what not. I brought it in the...

Looking good Jim! My trachy's are about in the same shape as yours, burnt leaves, no spear pull, and the bases are still green, so hope that mine and yours will both pull through. Interesting that you posted pics of your arundo donax, because I just bought a 25g pot of this stuff today (posted a pic...

Arundo Donax... any opinions on this stuff?
Just picked up a clump of this stuff today... It's also referred to as wild cane, giant reed, spanish cane, etc... It caught my eye last fall at a local nursery that had a huge clump of it that was at least 15 feet tall, and it looked very tropical to me. Today, I stopped by the same nursery, and on...

Last November, I covered my largest basjoo clump with a leaf enclosure that ended up being about 5 feet in diameter and 5 feet tall, in an attempt to overwinter the entire psuedostems... In past years, I just chopped them to the ground and mulched them, but this year I wanted to see if I could overw...

I also started my own desert this year (http://www.palmsnorth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2634 for the build thread) Perhaps we can share some ideas since we're in t...

Wenike, I have to agree with everyone that posted above, and I can tell you from my own experiences that the needle palm is probably your best bet. I'm in a northern 6a, and I have needle, trachys, and a few others planted in the ground, and the needle is the only one that made it through the winter...

Jim, you certainly have an amazing garden! The main thing I wanted to ask you about is that it appears that your garden is rather flat, and right at the soil line. Did you dig below the soil line and put sand in the hole? I'm afraid that if I dig below the soil line, in order to put the sand to the ...

Jim, the soil thing was something I have been wondering about. I had planned on leveling out the soil in order to put about 6-8 inches of sand on top of it, and I had read that amount would be enough sand. Do you think I'd be better off to just remove the soil entirely and fill the entire thing with...

Jova's raised cactus bed build, with pics!
A few weeks ago, after seeing some pics of amazing cactus gardens online, I decided to fill the ugly, empty space in the center of my circle driveway with a cactus bed of my own. I found a large pile of old bridge timbers from a railroad back in a clearing on my farm, so I planned to use those for t...

Thanks for the replies folks... I love the idea of not having to add any potting soil or peat moss, since that was going to be my only expense in this entire project:) Already had the railroad ties in a pile here on the farm, and I'll just be digging the sand out of a local riverbed. As far as the i...

Need an ID on this yucca please!
Hello. I found a group of these yuccas growing in the woods just off of the road near my home. They appear to be growing wild, and aren't anywhere near any houses, and there's probably around 30 of them. Can anyone tell me what they are? They are a trunking yucca, about 2 feet tall with trunks about...

Some pics from before everything got covered up for winter:)
Hey all... I've never posted any pics of my plants here before, so I thought I'd toss up a few pics from october/november of last year. Almost everything in these pics, except for the large basjoo clump, was planted last season. These are a few pics that I snapped in the fall before covering everyth...

Paul, I'm near Terre Haute, about 30 miles southwest. And as far as temperature around here, yes, we have had cold snaps well below 0 in the past, but not that I remember in the past few years since I've been into this hobby, and the really cold weather is usually just overnight and doesn't last for...

I've had basjoo clumps in the ground for 5 years here in zone 6a southern indiana, and they've always came back stronger every year. I have them on the south side of my house, right up against the foundation. In the winter, I just chop em down and put a trashbag over them, and then cover it with 8-1...

Putting in cactus bed and need some opinions please!
Alright, so I've started working on building my new cactus bed. It's going to be in the middle of my circle driveway, in full sun. The current plan is a 12 foot by 12 foot square raised bed, using old railroad ties for the sides. I've heard it's best to grow cacti on a hill, so the plan is to make a...

It's been in the 60's here the past few days, with lows in the 5 day forecast not dropping below the high 30's, so I went ahead and uncovered the needle palm, crapemyrtles, and one small cactus (unsure of the species). Everything looked just as good as it did before I covered them up. Only thing lef...

Need cold hardy cactus starts for my new desert garden! :)
Hello. I've just begun work on a desert garden here in zone 6a Indiana. I'm looking to get some starts off of several species of cold hardy cactus, or anything else that would make sense in a garden like this. If anyone can help me out, please let me know! I don't really have much for trade, other t...

When should I uncover all this stuff?
Hello. I'm located in zone 6a southern Indiana, and I have 1 needle palm, 2 trachy's, a few basjoo clumps, a chinese fan palm, and 2 hardy crape myrtles that are all planted within 5 feet of the east and south sides of my house. All plants were sprayed with fungicide and covered with leaf piles/cage...
