well, if you want my opinion on the palm, I think you should sell it to someone who lives in Ontario and cant get a large trachy anyhwere...someone who would take care of it, someone who would love it! well it faces s/w. It has about 3/4 of the day sun exposure. It seemed to really enjoy the ample exposure last summer...pushed out a new spear every week. its still going crazy. I am happy with it. I didn't go to Valleyview..I called and the guy names Musa said that the biggest they got in was 7 gal...

Ya, the trachy is really doing well...the new growth is fast and green. I think these are tuff palms. I learned they are not indoor palms. I am going to get one more to replace the one I lost (from being in the house) and I will plant it...thats it for this summer...(yaa right)

question for BC members

hello,

my question is this...what is the largest sized trachy (trunk hight) that is sold on the west coast? Around here the tallest is about 2 or 3 feet of trunk. I figure if they are a little more common on the west coast then maybe they come a little bigger...

I can't complain really. Its been pretty sunny here with temps in the mid teens most days. 22 today. long range shows mainly low 20's. I am going to go grab one of the larger t. fortunei's palmetto man found. They like these temps....the little one I planted last year that I thought I killed is grow...

No, Arctic Palm in not in the arctic, however, with the temps here the last few weeks I am becoming confused....I am almost as far south in Canada as possible.

Ok, not to sound bitter but......SHHHHHHHHHHHUSH!!!!!!!!! All of you western type people....lol

Snowed about 40 minutes north of here yesterday. High temp was 8 degrees yesterday and 14 today...tomorrow is rain and warming up to 11 degrees. Time for the A/C.

What does browning tips on the trachy mean, even the newest frond is browning at the tips..its inside and has not been subjected to any cold....Some places half way down the fan are browning,,,,?

I want to believe the folding fronds are a result of water, or lack of...It has not been watered since November, I thought the snow and wet in the ground would be enough but I think I was wrong...I have added water ever other day and I am waiting for a change. It has been very cold here this winter...the temp in the greenhouse doesnt go below 32F. Perhaps on cloudy cold days it does...I did just water it. The soil was like dust so I assume its very very dry, I will water every couple days. Thanks

I have taken the enclosure down due to our mild temps right now. As far as heating it goes, I have a flood light in the enclosure and the trunk has rope lights wrapped around it incase it gets real cold. I think it will do fine. If they are as hardy as everyone says then as long as I keep the crown ...

PALMETTOMAN The trachy's enclosure opens right up very easy..just a zipper. I will be opening it right up during the upcoming warm spell. I am more concerned with frozen moisture getting into the crown than cold temps...We have had several frosts here now and no ill effects. The very tips are a litt...

Hey Barrie,

I have 7 inch hook spikes holding the frame in place and I am going to fashion some kind of hurricane strap over the top. That should hold...We don't get too much wind and its sheltered by the house. But I am sure that if the wind got under it a kite it would become....

I only plan on using a flood light to heat it...and only during the night and coldest days. If what everyone says about Trachys is true then it should not need much in the way of heat. We'll see I guess.....

Question about tying up the fans of a palm

I got a small greenhouse for my trachy. Is it ok to loosely tie up the fans. This way they are not touching any of the sides????? Here are the pics..what do the experts think?? Any suggestions?? Unhappy Musa Basjoo

I have brought in my musa's so the frost didn't get them. They don't look to happy...very droopy leaves, leaves drying out and becoming brittle. Any ideas??

The lizards were like wild cats down there...All over the place. They didn't let u get too close. I was about 5 feet from that guy when I took that pic. There were also wild Tucans everwhere. Soil smelling like ammonia

Here is a question for all....I have brought in several of my less than hardy palms. I have noticed over the last few days that 2 of them, the soil reaks of ammonia. It is so strong. Its just the soil....I am wondering if anyone knows whats up. Any help??
