The Plant Farm on SSI
Jay, Jeff & Morgan haven't closed down as far as I know. I drive past the Plant Farm all the time and I'm sure they still have a sign out front. Maybe they changed their e-mail address. I'll ask Jeff next time I bump into him. I saw him in town the other day. Joe

I like that, it's got a ring to it! Man would I like to own that place, but it has gone even more since she purchased it in Oct. 2004. Add another few hundred thousand on that million. Cheers, Joe

Believe it or not
All of the white beaches on our island appear to be sand, but they are actually crushed shells. That garden where I took that pic. was a friend of mine's. He sold it to a nice couple from Alberta over a year ago. They only come out once in a while. I still go down there to take pics. and collect see...

Arborescent palms
There are no trunking palms that will survive in zone 5 unless you are willing to give it the full meal deal each Winter. You would have to build a fricken structure around it to keep the extreme cold from freeze drying it. Don't believe everything you read. I would definately ask if it is guarantee...

I have a couple of tree ferns in my garden. My largest specimen I planted in 1994 has over 4'ft of thick trunk and 8'ft fronds. It is rare that they ever turn brown from cold. I have only seen that happen once since I planted it. They are as lush as can be right now and by late March 2 dozen new one...

for a small 4" inch E.microtheca. I had my doubts that species of euc. would survive. They are a waste of time here. Lwest temp. here was -1.9 C. No damage on any plant. Even the Washingtonias look happy. Rhapis excelsa came through another winter. I planted it 4-5 years ago. Joe

Lowest temp. here this morning was -1.4 C. or 29.4 F. In town where the Jubaea and Phoenix grow the low was -0.6 C. All the Daffs are in full bloom at Grace Point. I was there this morning looking at all the exotics. It is quite windy there because it is right on the ocean. Joe

C.australis are roughly hardy to approx. -8 C. or 17.6 F. Duration of the freeze also makes a difference. I was in a garden today where there some nice 20'ft specimens with large crowns. Jubaea age
We guesstimate that the Jubaea growing here on SSI is at least 30 years old or more. When it first planted it in 1999 it was a crated specimen. It has actually put on a fair bit of trunk growth in 7 years. It wasn't nearly as heavy the first time I help plant it. I was looking at it today and it rea...

Jubaea measurements
After work today I measured the Jubaea. It is growing in town so it is very convenient to see. The frond length is 84" inches, some are a little longer. The trunk diameter is 25" inches and the trunk circumference is 77" inches. WE guesstimate it weighed between 600-700lbs. Joe

On Sat. Jan.28 we transplanted a good size Jubaea from one location to another. The job took several hours and some muscle work. The palm weighed between 600-700 lbs. and had a 2'ft. thick diameter trunk and 8'ft fronds. It is now growing in town. The move went perfect. cheers, Joe
