Bulgarian Trachycarpus
Over the years I have exchanged seeds with Kiril in Bulgaria. I do have Bulgarian strain growing in the garden, but our winters are never really cold enough to put it to the test. I also have many W.filifera palms I grew from seed that Kiril sent me. So far they have survived out a couple of Winters...

Good info.
I have also been growing hardy palms for the past two decades and propagating them by thousands for the past 15 years. R.hystrix is with out a doubt the hardiest bush typespecies then I would have to say S.minor. Both of these palms do prefer higher Summer heat. I have these growing in my garden her...

I also like to see the palms growing in wind exposed areas or frost hollows. I have alot of seed in stock and it's guaranteed...

I definately know my remote sensors are accurate because I have three of them in my Stevenson Screen along with a glass min/max and one other regular glass thermometer. The three remotes read the same. I have other sensors in my garden at different locations. Joe

Lady palm
I would have to say my most marginal species of palm planted out in the garden is Rhapis excelsa. I planted a 1 gallon specimen in 2001 and it has thrived since then. I have it growing in a west facing L-cove very close to the house. There is also a large tree fern growing beside it. Last Winter and...

Wow, that is cold!
The coldest temp. I recorded here was -0.7 C. or 30.7 F. on Dec. 1. It wasn't even cold enough to really damage any of the more tender stuff like Gingers or Bananas. This morning the low was 2.1 C. Lots of Fushias in full bloom here. The long range forcast looks good. Stay warm. Joe

Wes, I have one of those S.minor from Casino, but I managed to get a beter deal than that. I planted it in mid. May and it really has nice blue clooured fronds. It also has been flowering since I planted it. It has approx. 10 flower spikes in all. I'm not worried about S. minor at all, because I hav...

I'll take a dozen....
If I win the lottery. Seriousley they sound like a great palm. You should try getting hold of Casino Tropicals in Surrey, B.C. , Canada. Those guys are always importing large size hardy palms in mass quantities. Maybe the owner would scoop some of those. He had hoards of large Butias, Chamaerops and...

Hopefully I pelled that correct. Anyway I've propagated dozens of them from seeds over the years and they can be some what picky. They dislike to much dampness. They are subject to botrytis in the greenhouse when cooler conditions come in the Fall. I have managed to overwinter some seedlings outdoor...

I have experimented with W.robusta and Filifera for years now, but have always been very disappointed in the results. They are a short term palm here. However a few years ago I had a couple of hundreds seeds collected for me in Northern Turkey. They came from very large old W.filifera. I planted som...

Seeds
Aaron, I had no problem germinating them at all. I germinated them in my greenhouse. I also grow Rhapis excelsa in a sheltered spot now coming into Winter number 4. I'm impressed with it. I've had one survive 5 Winters once, but it perished from lack of Summer irrigation. Cheers, Joe

The most northern established palms I know of are the two T.fortunei growing in Sitka,Alaska since 1992. I recieved the latest edition of HPI today and there was a very nice pic. of them in there. Thanks Jay, I appreciate you posting the pics. I e-mail to you. That Washingtonia was actually featured in HPI years ago. I've taken Michael Ferguson to photograph it.
