Cali-wanna-b Winter?? I am not expecting a winter here near Toronto. I will not allow it!! Really, I am not sure what I am going to do. Either a local greenhouse or there is a couple of car dealerships in the area with 2 story show bays that I may put it in. If all else fails, I have a spot in my ho...

Hey Allen, Thanks. We'll see how good they look after winter. I think all or most of the ants jumped ship. I left the whole thing out of the new pot for a hour and when I went back there were no more running around. I am going to get ant traps. DO you know bananas? If so go to that section of the si...

The palm it's self is doing really good, new fan ever 2 weeks or so. Enjoy, Bismark's new frond http://upload6.postimage.org/586602/Bismarksnewfa...

I have people in the south thinking that we get 2 weeks in summer with above freezing temps and its dark all winter....it's too funny. People don't realize that in summer it's often warmer here then Orlando. A city here got up to 125f the other day. Our winters do suck but are not as bad as some thi...

Hi Kansas, I too have a coconut. The weather where I live has been very dry and coolish. I am talking low 70's, ya cool!!! Anyway, my coconut is doing really good. Had a few nights where outside temps dropped to the 40's (in july, can you imagine). I was very worried thinking I was out a coconut but...

Tropicman,

Try www.treehelp.com. They sell spikes for palms, all kinds of spikes. I do use manganese. Try that site and see what you think.

What about the palms that are rated in the upper 30's and 40's? Do you think they could servive if protected from snow and such.? In addition, your T. Fortunei's are MUCH larger than any I have seen around here. SO they me be hardier then the small ones I have.
Whats your opinion?

All great ideas, keep'em coming. I am pretty sure I am just going to build a greenhouse as seen on this web site.

I have seen some creative ideas from people on this site, very impressive. Goes to show we are either nuts or enthusiasts!!

Well,
If this winter is anything like last winter I won't be bringing anything hardy in till January. I need to research the hardiness for all my palms so I know when to bring them in.
If I ever went to South Carolina in a car I would be in trouble.!!! I would need a truck.

Okanagan desert-palms,

I got it at Broadway gardens here. It was very inexpensive. $25.00 I think...maybe $35.00. The Christmas was removed from a 12" growing container (very undersized) to a 18" bucket. Could probably use a larger container still.

I fully agree with the others. Build a simple shelter for your palm. They are hardy and can handle a lot. Don't go to extremes and cut it down. I can't see that being to good.
Just my 50 cents

My T. Fortunei I have planted out front has these big almost florescent looking mushrooms growing at its base. Is this a sign of anything or did they just pop up normally. I have never seen mushrooms around here before. Kinda odd!!!

Separated Pups

Hello,
I have several Musa Basjo I separated from the parent plant. All came with several long roots. I have planted them but was told not to water for a week. Is this right? They are already showing signs of shock.

I'm joking. They put them in a greenhouse. There is a place here that will overwinter large palms for you.

Musa Basjo Pups?

My Musa's have several pups each. I tried cutting one off to grow it and here is what I found. The baby was attached to the main stem. No roots or anything. I planted it and it's just dying. How do I separate them?
