I used spray foam to assemble and crack fill my palm shelter. My wife stood in the doorway until I had stripped off the clothes that had foam on them. Either they stayed outside until the foam hardened or I stayed outside.

Kansas; Fresh manure will burn your plants if you add too much. If your grandfather has a manure pile that is at least 4 months old help yourself and add it as if it is compost. Most people prefer well rotted manure because it has little smell. If you don't mind the smell, fresher manure is stronger...

Our new record for rain in January is 19 mm. There is no new record for most rain any day in January as the city centre only got 4.5mm. The west end, where a TV station is located, got 7.5mm and we got about the same.

That doesn't seem like much but it translated into over 1/2 inch of ice.

Today it got up to 3*C and rained gently most of the day. As a result, parking lots, side streets and sidewalks are glare ice as the ground temperature is well below freezing. The main streets are wet with nice sized puddles as the storm drains are mostly covered with packed snow and ice. While out ...

It has been bright and sunny all week. I wore a t shirt on Saturday & Sunday as the sun was so warm. Today it was a sweater under my parka with tuque, scarf and heavy gloves. I tried to shovel the skiff of snow but the wind drove me back inside. With the windchill the temp was in the low -40s*C....

I am enjoying it. But the Ice Carnival sure isn't. We just got back from it. Only one sculpture was recognizable with the rest melting away or falling down. The ice castle is starting to collapse and the maze is roped off.

This is the second year that warm weather has affected the carnival.

The problem with heating cables is that they cannot get wet, lay on the ground or contact themselves. They are designed to be taped to grounded, rigid copper pipe and can short out quite easily.

I did lose a Musa violaecea (sp) that I had in the front window during the xmas freeze. We had covered over the vent with stuff when the xmas tree was put up.

I am finally getting some time

I had a long summer; too busy in the day to read or post and too exhausted in the evening. I gave up trying to maintain a lawn free yard. I decided to use the greenhouse to germinate ornamental grasses for the yard and didn't plant more papaya.

I should have room to try germinating again this winter in the basement.
