End of Januray Update!
Hi All! FYI, I'm in a zone 4b/5a according to the USDA map from 1990. So far this winter has been 6a, with a few periods of extended freezing temperatures, but nothing too extreme (extreme for me = below -15F). With a brief warm up this week I thought I'd update on how plants are doing (those that I...

Right now we're at 50%... I must be honest I expected more of a bias toward T. fortunei with the number of PNW posters! I voted for Sabal palmetto, as it reminds me more of the tropics... For me, the only palm that strikes a tropical look like a palmetto is Cocos! I like fortunei, and it is one of t...

Plant Swap!
Hey all! I'm looking for anything interesting, especially plants hardy to zone 6 (at least). Particularily interested in bamboo, cacti, Yuccas, Agaves, palms, and bananas... To swap I have a lot of palm seedlings, Yucca seedlings, Cacti pads (perhaps offsets too), succulents (semps, Oostachys, etc.....

Which palm do you perfer?
After seeing the results from another board, I'm curious to see how people here respond (with the PNW bias!)... The other poll went decidedly one way. This poll is based on a pure asthetics (hardiness is not a concern)...

Can't really weigh in on hardiness or trunking here... But, I do have a Yucca glorisa variegata that I am testing this winter. So far it has seen temps of -22.4C. Not sure if it will look as good in spring, but I thought I'd post a pic of this small plant! http://inlinethumb22.webshots.com/39573/276...

Pretty crappy out right now. Neither of my locations were colder last night then earlier in the month. It's a bad time in Toronto, with no snow and cold, clear nights. Last night we hit -13C (Pearson) and -12c (City Centre). Meanwhile my location near kingston hit 0f (-17.3C) for the third time this...

Well, the city of Toronto has issued a cold weather advisory for the weekend... We're supposed to get down to -13C tonight (not quite as cold as the last cold snap) and hey are calling for -15C by the end of the week... Hopefully (fingers crossed) we'll only have one more cold snap this winter! I im...

USDA Zone vs. low to date!
Hey, what USDA zone are you classified as, and what is your low to date? I'll start, I'm right on the border between 4b and 5a (Kingston, Ontario) and the low to date was -22.4C (-8f)... Here in Toronto we're 5b (suburbs or away from the lake) or 6a (downtown or near the lake) and we've hit: -17 (1f...

Not an expert, but with the bright white undersides of the leaves it looks like the 'white', or regular, princeps to me! I thought that the green form was just a hoax? If you're looking for a Canadian source for princeps, broadway plants in St. Catherines has a few. They are small and expensive, due...

Zone 5 Hardy Bamboo
Just wondering if anyone has checked out this website before? http://www.needmorebamboo.com/ Lots of good info, and very inspiring for someone 1/2 to 1 zone colder. I know I can expect more damage, but a few species look to be worth trying (P. angusta, bissetii, rubromarginata, Arundinaria gigantea,...

As impressive as it is that there are palms in Alaska, it's still a zone 7, right? The palms wouldn't be exposed to temperatures that cold. As cool as it is to say 'there are palms in Alaska', if you know about ocean currents, it's not too suprising! Personally, I'm more impressed with people in Wis...

Ya, I thought the trachy was toast, but I decided to give it a chance to come back and then I started to feel sorry for it as it struggled to send up that first leaf! Poor thing. I hope I didn't lead you astray, the palms are protected (the needle had burlap last winter, the trachy a rhodo cone)... ...

Ha! Your Trachy is a few years older then I am! I haven't posted any pics of my palms... I have a few pics of the winter damage they received last year and their subsequent (slow) recovery. I have a single fortunei and a needle plam planted out. The Trachy was completely toastd in spring (I think I ...

Before the 84/85 winter, there was disagreement on what Beccari was growing. He wasn't clear on which of his three seed sources got seed from where... So could it be that Trachy fortunei seeds collected from Nainital region are hardier than T.fortunei seeds from 10 miles away...possibly and likely,...

I thought that I read in the originial paper that the takil palms grew between 8000-8500 ft on the north facing slopes? Am I mistaken? I agree about palm seed. Let me just say it's no fun when you spend the money to get some expensive seeds and nothing comes of it... Neither is it fun when you spend...

Re: One long subject
I hope you did get what you wanted. That one true takil that you see pictures of in books in rome was supposed to not be as cold hardy as T. Fortunei in any form. There were other T. takils that were supposed to be planted around the same time as the Takil in rome. Most of the Takils planted north ...

Wow! If it only had been protected in time... I assume that the plam experienced Kelowna's -16.5c freeze on the 2nd. Plus the 96+ hours that Kelowna was below freezing that week... Unfortunately, that would be more then enough to kill an unestablished palmetto (and probably even an established one.....
