Canadian Plant: When you see that Edmonton is below -40c, that is the International Airport readings, 20km outside of the city in a sinkhole. Its always on average 10 degrees colder than the city centre and my backyard seems to mimic city centre. It was -35C this year as a low (-46 airport) and that...

Give me a week and I'll post a picture, I want it to be a little bit bigger and we have mid 8...

Beginning of my Edmonton, Alberta desert garden.

I was very impressed at the desert garden in Calgary thats been started up and shown in these forums. I'm going to be creating a whole second garden in my front yard that will be all desert plants. This Yucca filamentosa is the first of many but its in my non-desert garden. It looks too tropical wit...

Trachy Palm in Edmonton

Hey everyone: I had planted a windmill in Edmonton in my backyard last year and left it with no protection all winter. All of the leaves browned off as you would expect them to, but as I checked the inside of the crown today, it seems like a new fan is pushing out. I may be crazy but its green color...

Allen, I'm looking to plant a bunch of yuccas this year. Many of the same type that you have. I would love to try the elata, it looks like a possible winner for trunked yuccas in our area. Interesting data. I've been following the same type of thing with Edmonton's city centre data. The international airport is 30km from city centre, so its a horrible measure. Out of every 10 winters, we probably see 4 that are 5a now, 4 that are 4a or 4b, and two at max that are 3b. Our warmest winte...

293mm = 11.5 inches

They are already setup to deal with international customers and the prices aren't half bad for larger ones. Check it out if you're from Canada.

I got absolutely no help from the staff when I phoned Greengate but thats pretty typical for an Albertan greenhouse. They had no clue what a yucca was and tried to describe over the phone what they had. Oh well...maybe you'll have better luck then me.

Allen:

That chinese fan palm is said to be good as a die-back perennial for zones as cold as zone 5 if well mulched. Is that what you are hoping to do with it? And I was reading the magazine Alberta Gardener yesterday. Apparantly Greengate Greenhouses in Calgary carry Yucca Rostrata's now.
