Heidi; Your yard looks great. Paul; I object to your reference to Alberta not maintaining good public horticulture. You obviously have missed Edmonton's massive plantings of perennial blooms in our public areas. Once you have seen these areas of Dandelions with their gorgeous yellow blooms followed ...

Edmonton already charges for waste water based on Water purchased. It would only take a stroke of the pen for some idiot bureaucrat to add a charge for processing rain water. This is a city that, in order to reduce an unforseen deficit of $35,000,000, closed 1 recreation centre and chopped back hour...

Jay;
I found 'All About The Fans' who specialize in Nascar. They are at 7321-101 Ave 780-462-4320. That is in the Capilano area. They have a web site www.allaboutthefans.ca When I checked it was temporarely closed.
If you like I can PM the yellow pages collectibles section to you.

Barrie, I killed off a horrible vine when we first bought this place. Don't know what it was called but it had been allowed to grow without any attempt at trimming it for at least 10 years and had reseeded itself. Roundup just stunted it and I sprayed 2 or 3 times a year to keep the regrowing to a m...

Sorry Jim; The heating cable was set to come on at 37*F and shut off at 43*F. Last winter the remote thermometer failed so I don't know what the low temp inside the enclosure was. The previous winter the low temp in the enclosure was -6*C/22*F. Barrie; For me it is relatively warm as my wisteria vin...

Agaves and Yuccas in Zone 3
The snow finally melted enough to check on the yuccas and agaves. All but one baby Agave Parryi survived. http://www.postimage.org/aV1mMJjA.jpg http://www.postimage.org/Pq1lYay9.jpg The Y filamentosa, flaccida and wide leaved elata were all flattened by the snow. They look rough but not as bad as la...

Very dessicated Chamerops
The temps finally stopped getting to -10 or lower overnight on the weekend and I uncovered the Chamerops to find the entire top dessicated. It occurred from having the power cut off for up to 2 days last winter and/or the blazing sun with temps of -15*C late winter and spring. If it recovers, I am g...

That filamentosa doesn't look too bad and the larger palms and holly look good. I hope that my plants look as good when I get to look at them in about a month. I haven't taken the shelter off of my palm but it looks pretty brown. I'm hoping that the power outage was not long enough to harm the roots...

We set a new record for temperature change in 24 hours today. From -29*C to 3*C a total of 32*C/58*F change in 1 day. This does not include wind chill calculations which would have added another 10*C/18*F. When I went out to bring in the garbage garbage cans this morning i wore a T shirt, jeans and ...

My favorite proven hardy plant would be a Belamcanda chinensis which has survived completely unprotected and bloomed consistently for 5 years. I have 2 bushes that have survived consistently without protection but have not bloomed --yet--. So far this has been the mildest winter in terms of actual t...

Here are pics from today. I shoveled out the sidewalks and the drifts are gone. The Palm shelter is below the bedroom window http://www.postimage.org/Pq_GMsS.jpg The yuccas in the 'desert' are buried under 2' of snow. I haven't seen them in a couple of months. http://www.postimage.org/Pq_G63r.jpg Wi...

It has been a while since we got snow, -15*C and winds of 30+ K. My wife was still thinking of yesterday's 6*C, sunny day when she opened the door just before sunrise this morning. I held the door closed to keep her from coming back in. :lol: Then watched from the window as she waded through knee hi...
