Barrie, rather then using Xmas lights may I suggest using a heating cable that is used to prevent pipes from freezing. The cable has a built in thermostat that switches on as the temperature approaches 0C. Xmas lights or other incandescent's may fry your ensete in such a small enclosure.

Artic palm, You should cut the dying leaves off and put the plants into storage since they are likely dormant right now. How big did you Musa basjoo's get this summer? I was a little disappointed with the growth of mine because we had some really cool nights in July that seemed to slow their growth ...

I am pretty inexperienced compared to others on this forum. Your palms look a little limp/wilted which could be as a result of bare rooting them. The fronds look like the palm was picked up by the pot and shook hard. Allen I agree with Allen. The palms were not handled with care. The plants look he...

Barb,

Cut off the dead leaves and the plant will look much better. That basjoo is just a wee baby and will be a monster by the end of summer. I have had bananas stuck at customs for a month and they were fine. Bananas store extremely well.

Musa basjoo in the Toronto Star

I not sure if any the board members have seen this article in the Toronto Star. It was published in November of last year. Phil posted the article, but there was a database error in the forum board and the post was deleted. Enjoy! :D

Thats a good idea. Not only will that aid in drainage which is very important, but the palms will look taller too!
